Located in an area filled with a dozen burger stalls (including Bones), LAB certainly holds its own with its special offerings of smash burgers.
Local Area Burger in TTDI
LAB is located just outside the Maybank branch in TTDI.
Open from 3pm until midnight (closed on Mondays), Local Area Burger specialises in American-style smash burgers.
There are only four options on the menu here: Smash Single (RM9.20), Smash Single with Onions (RM11.50), Smash Double (RM13.20), and Smash Double with Onions (RM15.50).
LAB only serves homemade beef patties that are 100% Australian beef, with a 70:30 meat-to-fat ratio for a nice juicy bite.
Local Area Burger is known for its smash burgers
Smash burgers are essentially burger patties that are smashed on the grill to yield a crispy texture on one side, while retaining the juiciness of the beef on topside.
The burger is topped with onions (which are again cooked to caramelization), cheese, homemade sauce, and pickles.
Smash Burger is delicious
We ordered the Smash Double with Onions (RM15.50) - which comprises two smash patties, two slices of cheese, and onions.
This was delicious! Due to the technique, we could really taste the crispy burnt edge on one side, and the juiciness of the patty on the other.
The onions were also cooked perfectly to yield a lovely caramelisation. We liked that they used high-quality cheese which complemented the patties.
The bits of pickle provide some tang and we like that they did not drown the burger with too much sauce so we could taste the natural sweetness of the beef.
Nevertheless, we never found the burger dry at all.
Summary
As we arrived at 9pm on a Saturday evening, we waited for 45 minutes for our burger to arrive. However, we learned that the waiting time is shorter in the afternoon.
Overall, Max really enjoyed this burger. If you're a big eater, we advise ordering two Smash Double with Onions for a fuller meal.
Ming still prefers the juicier burgers at Bones, but Max enjoyed this unique offering from Local Area Burger.
