[Muslim-friendly] Have you tried Chilli Crab Udon? Team Udon TTDI specialises in fusion udon with a spotlight on local flavours.
Team Udon recently opened its second branch here in TTDI. We saw it on a fellow foodie Melxeat's Instagram and decided to check it out for dinner.
Team Udon in TTDI
Team Udon first burst onto the local dining scene when it opened its first branch in Jalan Tun HS Lee - close to the Masjid Jamek LRT station.
Compared to other traditional udon spots in KL, Team Udon serves a variety of fusion udon dishes that incorporates local flavours such as Buttermilk, Chilli Crab and Udon Lemak (their version of Nasi Lemak).
There's also traditional offerings on the menu such as Niku Udon, Bukkake Udon and Ponzu Wasabi Udon for those who prefer a more familiar taste.
This shop is located on the first floor of a shophouse facing Cafe Chef Wan in the popular commercial square in TTDI. We like the bright space which makes for quite a comfortable dining experience.
Set meal for two
Since it was the first time here for us - we decided to get the Set Meal for Two (RM45).
The set comes with two types of udon of your choice, a side, mochi and drinks.
We decided to try the most popular dish on the menu - the Crab Chilli Udon with Prawns, and Niku Udon for something traditional.
Crab Chill Udon with Prawns
The Crab Chilli Udon with Prawns was definitely the most enticing item on the menu with its bright orange and thick gravy.
The noodles are served in a bowl of chilli crab sauce infused with egg and topped with lots of shrimp cooked in dashi broth, fried golden mantou and spring onions.
This was definitely a good representation of the two dishes. The gravy is sweet, savoury and slightly spicy which wouldn't taste out of place in an authentic chilli crab dish. It did get a bit jelak after awhile - but this is easily remedied with the addition of chilli oil.
The prawns were the most outstanding element of this dish in our view, as they were really bouncy, fresh and succulent. The udon noodles have the requisite chewy bite - so no complaints from us.
Niku Udon
We actually preferred the light flavours of the Niku Udon, as the soup has enough umami for a satisfying slurp. The beef slices were delicious.
We opted for the Chicken Gyoza for our set meal, which did the job.
The Mochi (which comes with Pandan and Red Bean filling) were a nice touch to end the meal.
Summary
Overall, it was a decent experience here at Team Udon. We'll return to try their other dishes on the menu as the Lemak Udon and Buttermilk Udon.
