Mul Naeng Myeon

at Pyongyang Myeonok

My views on mul naeng myeon continue to evolve.  I'm coming to appreciate the dry, beefy broth of Pyongyang-style MNM, especially when aggressively seasoned, like at Eulmildae (see 4.071 Mul Naeng Myeon) (this is me eating self-served crow).  Maybe I'll come to favor the lighter, delicate broth at Pyongyang Myeonok someday (this is me covering my ass preemptively).

Near the entrance, on the way to the mens' room, a pile of radishes.

Oh come on!

Hanging on the wall at the entrance of the restaurant, a huge framed blowup of an article from the newspaper Chosun Ilbo, dated 4-5 June 2011, lists the results of a survey on MNM restaurants in Seoul.  According to a whopping 50 people originally from Pyeongan-Do, the province where the city Pyongyang is located, the top 6 restaurants for Pyongyang-style MNM are:

1.  Pyongyang Myeonok

2.  Eulji Myeonok

3.  Pyeonglaeok

4.  Woo Lae Ok

5 (tie).  Nampo Myeonok

5 (tie).  Pil-Dong Myeonok

In addition, a separate survey comprising "office workers" of unknown number/demographics included Eulmildae (#4) and Bongpiyang (tied #6).  That's 8 Pyongyang-style restaurants total.  To explore Pyongyang-style MNM further, I will try to visit them all.  Stay tuned.
