Miyatake Sanuki Udon

[Non-halal] U don't need a good reason to eat udon!  Miyatake Sanuki Udon - which formerly operated in Isetan, 1 Utama - has moved to Mont Kiara.

Miyatake is now located at Residensi Duta Kiara - away from the busiest area of the neighborhood and closer to the Solaris Mont Kiara enclave.

Miyatake Sanuki Udon

Miyatake Sanuki Udon

As the name implies, Miyatake specializes in udon -  a Japanese thick noodle made from wheat flour, water, and salt.

In particular, Miyatake specializes in Sanuki Udon - noodles that originate from the Kagawa prefecture in Japan. This udon is characterized by its angular shape and chewy texture.

All of the noodles here are made in-house fresh daily. The chef can be seen making the noodles with the noodle-making machine located at the front of the restaurant.

Sanuki udon in different styles

The Sanuki udon here can be enjoyed in a variety of styles - from udon served in hot broth, to cold noodles served with dipping sauce.

Apart from the clear dashi-based broth, Miyatake also serves udon in spicy miso broth.

Pork Udon - tasty broth, chewy noodles

For our first visit here, we decided to try Pork Udon (RM25) and Zaru Udon (RM17).

The Pork Udon is lovely. We enjoyed the clear broth which has light savouriness from the dashi and the sweetness of onions.

The garnish is simple with only green onions, and we liked that the pork belly wasn't sliced too thin, so we get a satisfactory firm bite from it.

As expected, the freshly-made noodles were excellent with a nice chewy bite.

As for the Zaru Udon, the cold noodles were a bit too firm at the beginning but they somehow softened towards the end.

The dipping sauce is lovely as we enjoyed hints of ginger and sweetness from the soy sauce.

Beautiful fat, juicy karaage

The Chicken Karaage (RM21 for three) is the fattest we've seen in the Klang Valley.

More importantly, the fried chicken pieces were not just filled with batter, but they actually contain thick chicken thighs.

Despite the size, the batter is incredibly light and crispy - and the meat was so juicy.

We saw an order of Karaage at every table, and we understood why: they were delicious!

Decent tempura

To supplement our noodles, we also ordered a variety of tempura - prawns (RM7 for each), eggplant (RM6), mixed vegetables (RM7), and pumpkin (RM6).

We thought the tempura was pretty standard - the batter was light but nothing too exciting or outstanding.

Summary

Overall, we really enjoyed the hot udon for its excellent chewy noodles and tasty broth.

The Karaage is probably the best we've eaten in the Klang Valley - huge but fried with a light crispy batter with juicy meat.

We'll return for the Karaage and try Miyatake's other udon offerings.
