Object Lesson: How We Should Respond to Frustration

"I told you these things so that you can have peace in me. In this world you will have trouble. But be brave! I have defeated the world!"

John 16:33

We all get frustrated. Ask your children what makes them frustrated.

God doesn't want us to be stuck in the feelings of being frustrated because that can lead us to negative attitudes. Instead, He wants us to trust and give our frustrations to Him. He will help us figure out how to deal with the frustration.

How we respond to frustrations is up to us. Feeling frustrated is okay, but it's not good to use it as an excuse to act out, abuse others, or give up.

When you are angry, do not sin.
    Think about these things quietly
as you go to bed. Selah
Do what is right as a sacrifice to the Lord.
    And trust the Lord.

psalm 4:4-5

OBJECT LESSON

Stand against a wall and do a wall squat with your back pressed against the wall; sit like you're sitting in a chair. Hold this position for 60 seconds. Try to make it to 100. When you stand up, relax your legs. Ask the children how the burn felt in their legs during the squat, like the feeling they may feel when frustrated. How do your legs feel when they are relaxed? What happens when we stop focusing on frustration and instead trust God and what we will do about it instead?

PRAYER

We all get frustrated sometimes but thank you for giving us the strength and wisdom to overcome frustration. Please remind us in every situation in which we feel frustrated, that we can trust you and put our energy elsewhere. Amen.

My dear brothers, always be willing to listen and slow to speak. Do not become angry easily. Anger will not help you live a good life as God wants. So put out of your life every evil thing and every kind of wrong you do. Don't be proud but accept God's teaching that is planted in your hearts. This teaching can save your souls.

Do what God's teaching says; do not just listen and do nothing. When you only sit and listen, you are fooling yourselves.

James 1:19-22
