Xiu Ye Mao Pan Mee 小夜猫 in Jinjang

[Non-halal] Have you tried curry loh pan mee? Cooked by an Indian man no less? Imagine our surprise when we caught wind of Xiu Ye Mao Pan Mee 小夜猫 (Night Cat) stall.

Located in Jinjang, this stall is open from 11 am-10 pm daily. As the Chinese name implies, the stall is mainly catered to those looking for a good supper at night.

However, the noodles were good too when we had them for lunch.

Xiu Ye Mao Pan Mee 小夜猫 in Jinjang

Xiu Ye Mao Pan Mee looks like any non-descript stall at a corner of a cross-junction. Upon entering, we were greeted by an Indian gentleman who promptly took our order as we seated.

A peek behind the counter shows a younger Indian brother cooking each bowl of noodles that were being dished out for lunch.

Besides the traditional pan mee soup, Xiu Ye Mao Pan Mee also offers ma lat, curry, dry chilli, and loh pan mee.

Xiu Ye also offers a special combination of curry loh pan mee - which is a combination of Cantonese-style gravy and curry.

You can also opt for thin, thick, or hand-torn noodles here.

The traditional pan mee soup is nice

The litmus test for any pan mee stall has to be the Traditional Pan Mee Soup.

And we are happy to report that the one here is quite lovely.

Note that the hand-torn noodles here are made the traditional way, which are not hand-pulled (e.g. pan mee seen at Kak Yati in Section 17) which gives it a bit more girth and bite.

The starch from the noodles naturally colours the broth - which is already very sweet due to the generous amount of sayur manis, mushrooms and anchovies used.

We enjoyed the toppings of porkballs, fishballs, and sliced meat, but the standout here is the crispy fried anchovies that flavours the soup beautifully.

The accompanying chilli paste has quite a good spicy kick too!

Curry loh pan mee

We also found the Curry Loh Pan Mee to be surprisingly delightful.

The special dish is basically Cantonese-style egg gravy and curry broth combined to create a thick gravy that's slightly creamy, spicy and a whole lotta savoury.

We liked that the noodles also came with sayur manis, and the same protein (meatball, fishball), and topped with a generous amount of fried shallots on top for an added umami.
