Chocolate Beef Stew

Chocolate and beef are not two ingredients I would have put together, especially in a stew. As it's Easter, almost, I thought I would pull out an old recipe and revive it. I made a similar dish many years ago and I thought it was a good idea to make it again. I remember the chocolate making the sauce lovely and thick and creamy. So a perfect dinner for the Easter weekend. Plus I also thought this would be a different dish to serve over the weekend as well. I'm sure we will be enjoying this dish at Easter and we hope you will too. Below is video and recipe for you.

Equipment

  • Sharp knife
  • Chopping board
  • Saucepan with lid
  • Teaspoon
  • Stirring or wooden spoon

Ingredients

  • Beef stewing steak x 500g
  • Leek x 1
  • Butternut squash x 200g
  • Carrot x 1
  • Tomatoes x 1 400g tin
  • Bone broth, chicken stock or vegetable stock x 200mls
  • Dried mixed herbs x 2 tsps
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Raw cacao powder x 1 tsp
  • Spinach

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 160°C or gas mark 3.
  • Remove the top and the bottom from the leek.
  • Then slice the leek into half centimetre pieces.
  • Peel the butternut squash and remove any seeds with the spoon.
  • Slice the squash into 1 centimetre pieces.
  • Next peel the carrot and slice and dice it into 1 centimetre pieces.
  • If it's not already slice the beef into 1 inch pieces.
  • Put a large pan onto a high heat on the hob and add oil to the base of the pan.
  • When the pan is hot add in the beef and fry until it starts to turn golden brown.
  • Remove the meat from the pan onto a spare plate.
  • Add in the leek and fry until they start to soften.
  • Once the leek is soft add in the butternut squash and the carrot.
  • Continue to fry until these start to soften.
  • It will take about 5 minutes for the vegetable to start to go soft.
  • If the vegetables start to stick at any point turn the heat down and add in a little water as well and continue to fry.
  • When the vegetables are soft add in the cooked beef.
  • Mix all these ingredients together.
  • Pour over the tomatoes and broth or stock.
  • Sprinkle over dried mixed herbs and salt and pepper to your tastes.
  • Then sprinkle in the raw cacao powder and stir all these ingredients together again.
  • The oven should have preheated so remove the stew from the hob and place the lid on the pot.
  • Now put it in the oven and cook for about 1 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours.
  • At the end of the cooking process slice the spinach.
  • Carefully remove the pan from the oven.
  • Open the lid carefully and put the spinach in.
  • Mix it in and let it wilt down.
  • Then serve with mash or sweet potato mash.
  • Finally enjoy.
Chocolate Beef Stew

Chocolate Beef Stew was a yummy meal. My husband Howard and son Ted really liked this dish and they didn't even know there was chocolate in the meal. It's a great dish to make in advance. All the ingredients in this dish are freezable so you could freeze it and reheat it on another occasion. Plus you could make double of this dish and freeze it. It also makes lovely leftovers too. However you decided to eat this meal, as always, please enjoy. Thank you xxx
