Shu Kingdom General Hotpot

March 4

On my last trip to KL with my parents, I spotted a Chinese hotpot restaurant in the corner of my eye and wanted to dine there. Due to the packed schedule, I did not manage to eat there and on this trip, I made sure I planned ahead for dinner

Located at the corner space of Lot 10 Shopping mall, Shu Kingdom General Hot Pot really stands out from the rest of the building with its unique and distinctively Chinese-decorated stone brick structure. The exterior of the restaurant looks just like a Chinese historic building with its endless red lantern and ribbon decorations

The red lantern decoration is extended to the interiors and the entire restaurant is lit up mostly with these lanterns and some basic white light nearer to the kitchen space. They also mimic the Chinese pavilion designs within the booth seats so each booth seating gets decent privacy

There is only 1 sauces and condiments station at the front of the restaurant near the kitchen and they provide basic items like minced garlic, ginger, scallions, Chinese parsley, cut chilli, fermented beancurd sauce, sesame sauce, sugar, sesame oil, soy sauce, vinegar and more. There are no side dishes provided and no special chilli sauce

We ordered 3 different soup bases; the mala, tomato and mushroom broth. The broth for the hotpot was served in this cute ancient brass pot with 3 sections and really looks similar to those served in Chinese hot pot restaurants in China. The mala soup was salty and spicy with a strong taste of meat broth and meat oil while the tomato soup was more on the sourish flavour and not overly sweet. The mushroom broth was the lightest one but the flavour deepens as you proceed with cooking more ingredients

The quality of the meat was pretty decent and served slightly chilled. The meat was served quite fast after the order was made and plated neatly as well

Some special items we ordered are their handmade balls platter and duck blood. The handmade balls were made of real minced meat and not full of flour so you get to taste the original taste of the meat. The best thing about the hot pot is the duck blood which you cannot find in Singapore at all. It is smooth with a soft texture and is very tasty when cooked in the mala soup

Overall, the ingredients served at the restaurant were all very fresh and servings were of medium size. While the pricing is considered high in local terms, it was very affordable for us due to the exchange rate so we could order many different dishes. The best dish for me is the duck blood as I absolutely missed having it from my Taiwan trip. The service staff is also polite and attentive and the flavours are extremely authentic to Chongqing hot pot in China
