Trip To East Anglia / Dinner At Old Bicycle Shop

わたしたちが都会に滞在するときに楽しみにしているで主なことは2つあって、1つはお買い物、もうい1つはレストランです。とは言え、お買い物はそれほどするわけではないのですが、周りにないお店があることが楽しいので見ているだけでも結構楽しめます。レストランもこの辺りには美味しいところがほとんどないですし、お店の雰囲気も普通なところが多いのでたくさんチョイスがある場所に行くとうきうきします。

There are mainly 2 things that we really look forward to when we travel to a city - one is shopping and another is eating out.  We don't actually do a lot of shopping but it is fun to be able to look in shops that we don't have around here.  Also we don't have many restaurants we like around here so it is great to be able to have so many choices.

今回、ケンブリッジで泊まった日の夕食は、夫が検索して見つけてくれた Old Bicycle Shop (古い自転車屋)というレストランに行きました。その名の通り、昔大きな自転車屋さんだったところをレストランに使っていて、昔の名残があちらこちらにあって面白く、オシャレというか今風というか、とても良い感じでした。

In Cambridge this time, we went to a restaurant "Old Bicycle Shop", which is what my husband found.  Just as the name suggests, it used to be a large bicycle shop, very interesting and "in" interior.

 

 

 

メニューもわたしが食べられそうなものが結構ありました。

Looking at the menu, I found quite a few items that I can have.

 

 

そして、なんと言っても活気があって、場所柄若い人が多かったのですがみなさん楽しそうで、わたしたちも「やっぱり、都会はいいよね〜!」と気分が上がっていました。

The restaurant was very lively with lots of young people (being Cambridge), who seem to be happy and having fun.  We were very happy to be in such a lovely place and saying how lovely it was to be in a city.

飲み物は、わたしは赤ワイン、夫はビター(ビール)。イギリスには数えきれない種類のビターがあって、これは初めて飲んだと言っていました。少し味見しましたが、フルーティーで美味しかったです。

I had a glass of red wine and my husband had a pint of bitter.  As there are so many different kinds of bitter, my husband said he'd never had this particular one.  I tried a little, it was nice and fruity.

 

わたしの前菜は、チキンとスモークハムのテリーヌ、椎茸のピクルス、ケイパーベリー、グリビチェソース。グリビチェソースというのは初めて見ましたが、ググってみたところ、ゆで卵をマヨネーズに混ぜたようなソースのようでした。チキンは臭みがありましたが量がとても少なかったですし、ソースの味が濃かったのでいただけました。ですが、何を食べてもソースの味になってしまうので、これが良い組み合わせかと言われると疑問です。でも、ここまではまだ良かったのです。

I had "Chicken & smoked ham terrine, pickled shiitake, caper berries, gribiche sauce".  I'd never heard of "gribiche" sauce before so googled it and found out it's a sauce made with cooked egg mixed with something like mayonnaise and it was.  Chicken was a little gamy but it was very small piece so I was able to eat it with the sauce, which had quite strong taste of egg, mayonnaise and capers.  I'm not sure if it's a great combination, though, if you like chicken terrine as the sauce killed the taste of whatever you are having with.  Still, up to then it wasn't too bad.

 

夫の前菜は、パンプキン・ラビオリ、セージバター、ローストパンプキン、マッシュルームのソテー、カリカリのエシャロット、パンプキンシード。クラッシックな組み合わせ。まぁまぁ、美味しかったみたいでした。

My husband ordered "Pumpkin ravioli, sage butter, roast pumpkin, sateed mushrooms, crispy shallots, pumpkin seeds".  Very classic combinations of ingredients.  He said it was OK.

 

わたしはメインに、Old Bicycle Shop 特製のハリッサでマリネしたチキンのケバブ、アイオリ、クランチーなコールスロー、柘榴、をオーダーしましたが、これは酷かった(涙)。まず、下に置いてあるフラットブレッドは上のソースでベチャベチャ、添える方が断然美味しいと思います。そして、チキンのケバブ、、、これってケバブですか?前の日のローストチキンの残りを割いたみたいなもので、ハリッサの味は感じられなかったですし、臭みもあるし(前日焼いたような味)、パサパサ。そして、コールスローはコールスローとしては普通に美味しいですがマヨネーズの味が濃すぎて他の何を一緒に食べてもマヨネーズ味になってしまいます。チキンが不味すぎたので、わたしはコールスローとパンだけ食べましたが。。。

I ordered "Old Bicycle Shop's Harissa marinaded chicken kebabs with aioli, crunchy slaw, pomegranate seeds.  This really was not enjoyable.  First of all, the flat bread was so soggy from the wet sauce of the slaw, it's much nicer if they serve it on the side.  Then the kebabs...  do you call this kebabs?  It was a little gamy like roast chicken cooked on the day before, the texture is what we would call 'pulled', very dry and I couldn't taste harissa.  Slaw tasted fine on its own but it such strong mayonnise taste, all you can tast is mayonnaise.  As I wasn't able to eat chicken, I just had some of the slaw with bread.

後で夫がレビューを読んでみたところもちろん、このお店を選ぶ前にレビューのチェックはしていて、多くの人はすごく美味しいとレビューされているのですが、「チキンのケバブとタルトタタンは(不味くて)食べられない、絶対オーダーしない方が良い」というレビューがありました。思わず、その人に、「そうでしょ?!」と言いたくなりました。美味しい、美味しくない、は人によるとは言え、これを美味しいと思う人がいるのが不思議です、でもいるんですよね。

My husband read some reviews of this place, many people did write how good the food was here, but he did find quite a few negative ones.  (He did check the reviews before booking this but as we know there are always bad reviews we ignored them."  One of them said "Chicken kebabs and Tart Tatin were inedible, do not order."  I wanted to say, "I agree!"  I know we all have different taste but I just cannot believe anyone thinks these chicken kebabs are enjoyable.

 

夫は、スクウォッシュ、ココナッツ、レンティルカレー、パパドムとヴィーガンライタ添え、にチキン追加、というオーダーでした。こちらは、かなり薄味でスパイスも少ししか感じられないかなりマイルドな味付けでしたが、多少はカレーらしい味はありましたので、わたしのケバブよりはかなりましでした。が、薄味なのでライスは大量に余りましたし、チキンはほとんど味はなかったです。

My husband had "Squash, coconut & lentil curry, with papadoms and vegan raita" and he added chicken.  It was under seasoned and not a lot of taste of spices, but at least it did taste a bit like curry so much better than my kebabs.  However, as it was under seasoned, a half of the rice was left and the chicken didn't have much flavour of anything.

 

 

デザートにタルトタタンをシェアー。タルト生地はべちゃbちゃ。りんごはジャムかと思うくらい柔らかくべったりしていました。でも、この間、フランス菓子の先生が日本で今はやっているタルトタタンはジャムくらい柔らかいりんごがのっているとおっしゃっていたので、そういうものなのかもしれません。生地がサクサクしていれば、もっと美味しかったと思います。

We shared Tart Tatin for a dessert.  The tart base was very soggy, the apples had lost their texture completely and were like jam.  My baking teacher told us that tart tatin that seems to be popular in Japan at the moment has jam-like soft apples so maybe this is how it's meant to be.  If the base is not soggy it would have been more enjoyable.

 

 

ウェーターさんがメインのお皿を下げにいらした時に美味しかったですかと聞かれたので、何も言わないつもりでしたが聞かれたら嘘もつけず、チキンのケバブでシュレッドしたチキンというのは初めてだし、スパイスの味もせずぱさぱさで美味しいとは言えませんとお答えしたところ、それは申し訳ありません、ギリシャ風のケバブはこういうものなんです、とおっしゃいました。本当に?いくら、ググっても、シュレッドしたチキンのケバブは出てきませんでしたが。。。

The staff who came to get the plates of the main asked us if we enjoyed it.  We were not going to tell them because we don't like creating atmosphere, but when we are asked we cannot like so we told him we'd never seen shredded chicken called kebab and we could not taste any harissa, it tasted gamy like roast chicken cooked on a previous day, the flat bread was totally soggy from the wet sauce so it's better to be served separately.  He told us that he was sorry that we didn't enjoy it but it is a Greek style kebab.  Really?  We spent quite a long time googling Greek style chicken kebab but we didn't find any shredded chicken like what we had.

そんなわけで、お店の雰囲気は素敵でワクワクしたですが、食事はわたしたちの口には全く合いませんでした。レビューを見るとこれをすごく美味しいと思って食べておられる方も多いようなので、やっぱり、好みが違うのでしょうか。わたしたちが言えることは、お友達のお宅でご馳走になったり自分たちで作るお料理の方が、断然美味しい、ということ。

We were so happy to be in this restaurant, which had a great vibe and very lively, but we didn't enjoy the meal.  In the reviews we read, the majority seems to enjoy their food, is it just we have different taste?  I cannot think so...  What I can say is that what we have had at our friends' home and what we cook at home are much more enjoyable to us.
