This small hidden spot was really discovered out of pure coincidence when we were walking down the famous jetties of Penang
Housed in one of the old zinc roof houses, the clay pot coffee cafe is a hit-and-miss if you just pass them in any vehicle. There is no obvious signboard except the small chalkboard up front to show that they are a cafe place. The entrance is also dated like the old houses found in the jetty area so it can easily mistaken as a private residential house
The entrance of the cafe is a small kitchen where the coffee and snacks are being made and while everything looks old and dated, they are quite neat and clean so you don't have to worry about the hygiene
Within the house is the main hall which is made into the seating area and separate rooms are also fitted with tables to seat more customers. The main decoration for the cafe is filled with retro vibes mostly during the Hong Kong Retro era where you see posters of Leslie Cheung and Bruce Lee as well as old fixtures and trinkets
The menu is simply laminated printouts tagged together with a ring and there is a nice introduction to clay pot coffee and how the clay pot is being made. They offer both coffee and non-coffee beverages as well as light snacks like toast and eggs
We ordered both the hot version of butter clay pot coffee and the iced coffee served in a metal tin mug. The clay pot coffee might look like a big serving but the amount of coffee is determined by the number of orders made so if the order is for 1 person, the amount of coffee is adjusted to serve only 1
The coffee was very hot when served in the clay pot so you need to be careful pouring it out onto the cup. While we ordered only 1 serving, the amount of coffee in the pot was actually enough for 2 people as I could actually fill the cup twice
Before the coffee is poured, the cup has chunks of butter and some evaporated milk and the hot coffee from the pot will actually melt the butter to give you a creamy, buttery coffee. The coffee tastes very different as it has many different layers. The first taste you get is the oily buttery flavour as you will get some butter floating on the top of the coffee. The next flavour note is the creaminess from the milk before you get hit by the strong and aromatic coffee flavour. In summary, it is a cup of coffee filled with flavour depth and as this is the first time I tried butter coffee, I was quite amazed by this. While I am not sure how butter coffee was supposed to taste, I was glad I made a stop here to try the coffee
Overall, it is a quaint little retro cafe which is worth a pit stop to rest your feet and chill for a while before braving the heat in Penang. The environment was interesting and fun to take pictures with for themed photos
