Before Yao Yao sauerkraut fish, the other famous sauerkraut fish was Tai Er and it was gathering long queues almost at every single outlet. Subsequently, more Chinese restaurants started to introduce sauerkraut fish as part of their menu
Yao Yao's inaugural outlet opened in Vivocity on 3 Aug 2023 and queues have already started to form at meal times. It was my first time seeing Yao Yao but the menu was pretty enticing to me. Notable as one of China's top 10 brands for pickled fish, Yao Yao has over 60 outlets back in China
Yao Yao stands out from the other fish restaurants with its pastel aquamarine brand color which is splashed across the signboard and interiors of the restaurants. Even the plates, bowls and cups used have a splash of the same colour for a uniform look and feel. The restaurant is also represented by a cute Merbear mascot in the same pastel colour. The seating area in the restaurant is not very spacious which explains the long queue during meal times and it also takes a while for customers to finish their meal
The differentiation from the other restaurants is that Yao Yao offers customers a split choice of 2 different kinds of fish. Their menu has extensive combos of single fish flavours or a split 2 types of fish soup. There are also combos to pair the sauerkraut fish with their Peking duck. The type of fish available includes sauerkraut fish, tomato fish and Sichuan poached fish. You can choose to pair 2 different flavours or pair 1 kind of fish with their famous Typhoon shelter prawn.
I chose the tomato fish paired with the sauerkraut fish as we could not do the spicy Sichuan version. I did not order the Peking duck as well since there were just 2 of us and we will not be able to finish the food. The fish slices were tender and smooth without any bones and the tomato version came with cabbage which was nicely soaked in the tomato soup which was tangy and savoury. The sauerkraut fish version came with the sauerkraut, beancurd, enoki mushroom and chilli and peppercorn. You can also add more ingredients to the pot at an additional charge. Yao Yao's version of the sauerkraut fish is mildly spicy with a nice peppery flavour and tangy soup which is not too sour
Ordering rice is a must for the fish dishes as both the sauerkraut fish and the tomato fish goes extremely well with rice. The rice is fluffy and soft and the serving size is nice for 1 person. We were also served a blooming tea which blooms into a pretty flower by the end of the meal. The tea was perfect to wash down the spice and grease of the meal
Overall, I find the dishes at Yao Yao pretty nice and great with rice. I would return again to try other dishes as well as the sauerkraut fish
