This Sunday we found ourselves at the doors of Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill (or MPW Nottingham for short) looking for a spot of Roast Dinner action.
To be honest it wasn't my first choice, but many places in town we first approached were booked up, but now I am so glad that we came here. Before we get down to talking about the food I will share that price wise this place was a better deal than many of the pubs I had contemplated in some cases by more than a few quid. I also suspect some of those were not going to be as nice as some were just bog standard city centre boozers at best.
Anyway I digress as today we were here at MPW Nottingham a place that I have meant to visit since it opened yet somehow had failed to do so . When they launched I was sent an invite and I politely declined saying that it was very kind but I will be along sometime soon to check them out. OK so its a long time since that day but I was here now with a big bag of pound coins all ready to buy some Sunday Lunch ๐๐คฃ๐
SUNDAY LUNCH MENU
The Traditional Sunday Roast section of the menu offered up a Roast Loin of Pork, a Roast Chicken Breast, and a Roast Sirloin of Beef. I did not deviate from my usual favourite opting for the Roast Beef. I did momentarily consider the "Marco's Mixed Roast" which was selection of all three but not today I was in the mood for some pink beef, hopefully lots of it too.
The meat comes served with 'all the trimmings' and to be fair they did make a decent effort of making the vegetables seem pretty appetising on the description. I am not usually a fan of red cabbage but 'Box-Tree Braised Red Cabbage' sounded quite appealing. Gravy? 'Madeira Roasting Juices' you get the idea.
ROAST BEEF
As is so often the case you get served your dinner in two parts, part one being the main event of the meat, in this case a big pile of luscious looking pink slices of roasted meat, a decent looking Yorkshire pudding, double potatoes (roasted and mash), a small slice of stuffing and and even smaller bit of pig in blanket and of course we all need a good dollop of thick gravy across the top.
VEGETABLE SELECTION AT MPW
For most blokes, that I know in my circle of close friends, that would be an acceptable meal but of course we also know that there will be a part two, the grown up vegetable element that we are supposed to add to the plate and of course we dutifully do when in polite company.
This part of the meal arrives shortly afterwards comprising several bowls of mixed vegetables and an unshown addition of cauliflower cheese.
We graciously spoon as little as we can get away with or as much as we like (depending on our eating lifestyles and tastes). At this point mid conversation I dropped a spoonful of the cheese sauce down my shirt and spent the rest of the meal with an undignified huff at my own carelessness๐คฃ๐ง
Once I had added my personal choice onto the plate, which was a little bit of everything (I knew I could go back for more) I had myself a really rather decent, dare I say excellent? looking plate of Sunday Lunch.
ROAST BEEF DINNER WITH VEGETABLES
It was much larger that the Sunday Lunches that we rustle up for ourselves at home and far bigger than I had expected from MPW Steakhouse. I had feared that it might have been a case of style over substance so I was delighted at the mammoth feast laid out before me
The highlight was the Roast Beef which was cut generously and as perfectly pink as requested. I reckon I got 4-5 slices which is way more than I usually get. The roasties and the Yorkshire pudding were decent and the often maligned mash was silky smooth and nice and buttery. I let it join in to the party.
The thumb sized piglet in blanket was a mere bite and I would have liked more of it or them, the stuffing the same, much too small to have an impact. Although having said that, it doesn't really matter as neither should be anywhere near a plate of Roast Beef (IMHO) ๐๐ง
I loved all of the vegetables, even the red cabbage, they were all cooked just as I would like and there was just the right amount so I had a bit of everything right until the last few mouthfuls.
All in all great success on the hunt for a well cooked Sunday Lunch at a decent price in town and one found in a most unexpected place where I honestly expected a smaller meal for the money. We were most happy with our lot on this day ๐๐
I really enjoyed my first visit to MPW in Nottingham and now I wished I had been long ago. I know that it is a chain but I can see that it is a pretty reliable one and I think I will be back to try again.
On the face of it it does look expensive, but they often have deals, especially at lunch time, so you might pick up more of a bargain if you keep your eyes on their socials and websites
