Big Tree Hakka Pan Mee

[Non-halal] Do big trees = good food? Our search for the best pan mee in the Klang Valley led us to Big Tree Hakka Pan Mee in Sungai Besi.

As the name implies, this roadside stall is located under a big tree (or a few?) in Taman Sungai Besi, KL.

Big Tree Hakka Pan Mee in KL

Big Tree Hakka Pan Mee is open from 8am-5pm daily and is closed on Sundays.

As it operates under a shack, the place can be quite warm on a sunny day. Thankfully, they have plenty of fans circulating the air around.

On a Saturday noon, we did not have any trouble getting a table upon arrival.

This place is popular with food delivery services, as we saw a beeline of Grab/FoodPanda riders collecting orders.

This family-run business also serves authentic Hakka pan mee, as we overheard the family members conversing in the dialect.

Signature Soup Pan Mee

We ordered the Signature Soup Pan Mee (RM8) with our choice of thick noodles.

And boy - this was one of the thickest pan mee noodles we've eaten! The noodles were cooked but they were so al-dente.

The portion was so big for the normal order that we couldn't finish the noodles. In hindsight, the normal thin noodles would have been the better choice here - as they would have the perfect thickness and al-dente texture.

While we prefer sayur manis, we thought the soup here was quite balanced with enough anchovy base and sweetness from spinach. No complaints on the toppings of wood ear mushrooms, anchovies and mince meat.

Dry chilli pan mee

Similarly, the thick noodles were quite a hefty portion for the Dry Chilli Pan Mee (RM11.50 with an added onsen egg).

Flavour-wise, we did enjoy the gravy mix and the chilli condiment packed a lot of heat! We definitely recommend adding the onsen egg for a creamier texture.
