Mrs Bunn's Cob Emporium is one of my go to places for a lunchtime snack, usually a filled cob of some sort, tuna mayo, roast pork (when they have it), or a sausage cob with red sauce, and if I am in the mood for a treat I'll have one of their classic bakes like a slice of cornflake tart
I hadn't written about this place in a long long time, back in 2013 it seems, and I wasn't as keen back then I have been in recent years. It was so long ago I had forgotten all about writing it (read more here)
I have never been there early enough to try one of their breakfast trays but always fancied one. Today I was feeling both ravenous and adventurous enough to delve into the world of delivery to summon one up to be sent to my door.
BREAKFAST MENU DESCRIPTION ONLINE
Deliveroo was my choice (other sites exist) so I splashed the cash and took my chances on the Large Boxed Breakfast listed on the site as being "2 x bacon, 2 x sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, beans, 1 x fried egg, 2 x hash browns, black pudding and 2 slices of toast"
LARGE BOXED BREAKFAST AS IT ARRIVED
I will be the first to admit that it didn't look that great when I opened the box. I could see beans and tomato in one section all mixed together. Everything else kind of piled in and jammed together
Now to be fair it had travelled on the back of a motorbike from the cafe to my flat and I would imagine it was a lot neater when it was packed up 🧐😎 The rider did instruct me to keep the well wrapped up box flat which was good advice as the bean and tomatoes were loose and free (I would have preferred that they had been put in individual pots but that is I suppose just more packaging waste
Anyway no matter really as I was about to spoon it all out carefully onto a plate at home and arrange it up as neatly as I could to make it presentable 🤣😎
BIG BREAKFAST AND TOAST PLATED UP
As I plated it up I really got a true idea of the vastness of this breakfast feast. I had no idea just how substantial it was going to be and even now I am not sure that this photo truly conveys that!
Officially there was supposed to be "2 x bacon, 2 x sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, beans, 1 x fried egg, 2 x hash browns, black pudding and 2 slices of toast"
I had almost three bits of bacon as I had two whole slices plus some extra bits (maybe it was the end of the breakfast rush). I also had a bonus extra slice of black pudding.
There were a lot more of the bean and tomato mix too and more mushrooms but there just wasn't room on the plate to fit it all on 'neatly'
LARGE BREAKFAST
OK highlights! The bacon was nice and thick with a good flavour, the black pudding was well seasoned, cooked through properly and sliced generously
Somehow that concoction of beans and tomato was quite sublime, on their own I do not particularly enjoy them but mixed together they developed a rather nice sauce.
The hash browns were big but perhaps a bit soggy for my liking, I don't really like them anyway so to charm me they need to be really crispy.
I don't know what was going on with the mushrooms, but I was hungry so I scoffed them down mixed up with the bean and tomato juices they were just fine.
The egg could have had a softer yolk but suspect that it continued cooking on it's way to my place so fair enough. It's hard to keep one perfect under such conditions.
The sausages were catering level at best but happily they had been very well crisped up so seemed more solid and meatier than they looked. As you know I quite enjoy a cheap sausage so I quite enjoyed them both.
The toast was thick sliced and buttered well. It was fulfilling it's job for mopping up all the juices perfectly. I couldn't eat it all (but I did try) 🤣
Overall this was good filling plateful. Sure I will concede that not everything was perfect but then what do you really expect from a breakfast delivered in a box on the back of a motorbike from the cafe down the road?
I was happy enough with my lot on this particular day and would probably have another one
