My mum was craving dim sum when we were on the last day of our JB trip and as she was not too mobile, we did not want to venture too far out so we settled for D' Shanghai which was within KSL Mall
I was first attracted to the banners and advertisements of D' Shanghai on the first floor of KSL Mall and have been wanting to bring my mum for a meal there during our trip to JB. Located on L2 of the mall which is on the 3rd floor of the mall, the restaurant is a semi-open concept where there are some tables in the open area at the foyer where shoppers in the mall can see people eating
The restaurant is quite huge and spacious with many tables available for customers. As the layout is long in length, the rows of tables go all the way in. The tables inside the restaurant are the same cushioned chairs with square tables which can be combined for bigger groups. The overall environment is bright and spacious
The dim sum menu is quite substantial with the usual dim sum items as well as some special dishes like steamed dumplings in superior stocks which are as big as 1 single bun stuffed into a ceramic double-broiled container. The prices are also very reasonable even without taking into consideration currency exchange
We ordered some of the usual dishes like steamed pork rib with yam and chilli vinaigrette dumplings which were decent as the pork ribs were soft and tender but the flavour was more bland. The same was for the dumplings as the size was huge and filled with crunchy and juicy prawns and meat, the flavour of the vinaigrette was not fragrant or sour enough
We also ordered mains like porridge as we needed to fill our stomachs before heading back to Singapore. The porridge was congee style with a thick and smooth consistency which is similar to the ones served at Crystal Jade. The flavour was light and very good for older diners but those with heavy palate would need to season it with the soy sauce. The noodles were harder than expected and did not have any egg flavours but it wasn't a bowl of bad noodles as the dumplings were fat and juicy and the soup had a nice savoury aftertaste
Lastly, we ordered the steamed dumplings in superior soup and the paper-wrapped chicken wing. The soup dumpling was huge and served in the double-broiled bowl which was not easy to eat as it was so huge, I had to break up the dumpling to consume it properly. There was meat, seafood and some kind of shark fin-looking ingredient wrapped inside the dumpling and the soup was more flavourful than the noodle soup. However, I have tried better soup dumplings and I find this version mediocre. The paper-wrapped chicken was decent with a nice savoury flavour which is properly infused into the chicken meat
Overall, some dishes were general and not considered top-notch dim sum but the environment was casual and comfortable for a simple meal. The noodle was ok with the dumplings and my mum liked some of the dishes. The meal was very affordable and good if you want to fill your stomach with an affordable and ok in quality meal
