SHIO aka chef Billy Mantle were in the Old Market Square at the AY-UP Market this weekend serving up some of his tasty Asian Street Food. Many of you may know him from his stints at Six Richmond House but he also has a food trailer and can be found at events around town from time to time.
THE MENU
The Menu for this event was very simple offering just a few dishes or rice bowls. Two meat ones and One Vegetable option. I really wanted to try out all his food so we ordered both of the Meat dishes, a Korean Chicken dish and a Short Rib Teriyaki dish
SHORT RIB TERIYAKI
The first dish we samples was the BEEF SHORT RIB TERIYAKI RICE BOWL that came with a dressing of Shallot Ketchup, Fermented Wild Garlic, Spring Onion, Cabbage & Pickle Salad for £12
The best bit about this dish was the soft and tender pieces of beef that just fell off the bone with the merest touch of my wooden fork. The sticky sweet Teriyaki sauce a perfect foil for the pungent wild garlic and that shallot ketchup which was more like a thick creamy mayo with a touch of spice
The cabbage, and spring onion added a bit of texture and crunch alongside the sticky rice. I quite liked the flavours of the accompaniments but would have been just as happy munching through a big slab of the meat on it's own
KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN
The second dish we tried was the KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN RICE BOWL that came served with with Shio sauce, Yuzu Kosho Mayo, Spring Onion, Cabbage & Pickle Salad for £10
This was also very tasty, the breading on the chicken was well seasoned, quite crumbly and the moist juicy chicken thigh inside the coating was perfectly cooked.
I think I liked the dressing on this dish better, there was something quite vibrant about the Yuzu Kosho Maya and the Shio sauce. They really pulled the dish together when mixed with the rice and that sharp pickled salad
I was very happy to have found SHIO at the market, I have kept meaning to check them out at Richmond House and think that now I have more inclination to make the effort and book.
At the moment you can find SHIO at Six Richmond House serving 'Modern, Asian small plates' Wednesday to Saturday and you can also find the trailer outside Hopkinson Vintage Antique and Arts Centre near the Station on the same days.
I can't tell you which one Chef Billy Mantle will be serving you at, perhaps both, perhaps neither, you'll just have to try them both out
