One of my favourite things about Taipei is the countless breakfast shops scattered across the city offering affordable yet delicious food to help people start their day on the right note
In the past, I would always visit the popular Yong He soybean shop along Xi Men Ding or join the never-ending queue for Fu Hang Dou Jiang. On this trip, I decided to just pop by this outlet which is a stone's throw away from my hotel building. Named Yon Ho, the Chinese name is the same as the popular Yong He Dou Jiang but I think they are not the same
The menu, design and logo are all different from the original Yong He and look more like a family business when I observed the staff. The shop is small with enough space for 10 to 15 customers each time. The shop renovation looks pretty new and caters mainly to the hotel guests around the area
You can order via the chit and bring it to the front counter to log the order with the staff. You will also need to make payment at the point of order. The menu is extensive for breakfast with popular items like soybean with fritters, pan-fried carrot cake, egg roll, fried vermicelli with toppings, scallion pancakes, sandwiches, and rice balls. The pricing is generally between SGD 2 to 5 per item
You will be given a buzzer to inform you once the order is ready for collection. I ordered 1 hot soybean milk and 1 cold soybean milk. I was quite surprised at the big bowl of hot soy milk which was perfect for me early in the morning. I had the unsweetened version which was milky and chocked with soy flavour
The egg roll was nicely wrapped in plastic and paper to avoid getting your hands dirty. It was perfect as a takeaway breakfast. There were a few options for the egg roll and we took the one with the fried fritters. It is quite an oily bite which goes well with soy milk and the crispy fritter can be quite messy to eat but it is a delicious egg roll
I also ordered the egg roll which comes with pork floss and it was nicely cut up and served in a box. Comparing egg roll with pork floss from other outlets I have eaten before, I found this egg roll quite disappointing as the roll was a bit dry without any sauce and the flavour was slightly bland
The last item we ordered was the pan-fried carrot cake which has a nice crust on the surface giving a nice charred flavour but the carrot cake itself was plain with little flavour. I found the carrot cake quite floury in taste and not comparable to the Hong Kong versions where you can taste the radish bits and ham bits which provide texture and flavour. Personally, I did not like the carrot cake very much
Overall, this Yon Ho soy milk outlet is not as nice as the popular ones but some of the items are passable in terms of flavour. If you are looking for a quick breakfast around the area or late-night supper, some items are still not too bad as a choice
