Kung Fu Smooth Pan Mee

[Non-halal] Kung Fu Smooth Pan Mee in Taman Sri Sentosa is a popular spot for traditional soup pan mee.

We last visited this place more than a decade ago. We had an OK experience then, but this recent visit changed our mind. Read on to find out.

Kung Fu Smooth Pan Mee in Taman Sri Sentosa

Kung Fu Smooth Pan Mee

Kung Fu Smooth Pan Mee is located in Taman Sri Sentosa, which is a suburb located off Old Klang Road.

This area is quite accessible from PJ, OUG and Bandar Sunway, with only a 5-minute drive from PJ Old Town.

We first learned about this place more than 10 years ago from a friend, who used to live in the area. Indeed, this restaurant is quite popular with the locals for breakfast until lunch as it is open from 8am until 2.45pm daily (closed on Mondays).

Come for the traditional pan mee

We recently visited this spot as another restaurant we wanted to check out in the area was closed.

After sitting down - we remembered why we had an "OK" experience back then. This restaurant occupies a shoplot with the dining area in an open space under a zinc awning.

Hence, we remembered sweating like buckets in hot tropical heat 10 years ago. And the hot soup did not help as well.

However, we found the area to be well ventilated this time around. Obviously, the best time to enjoy pan mee here is on a cloudy day.

Service is fast, food is delicious

The service here is prompt, and our food arrived within 10 minutes upon ordering.

The Pan Mee Soup (RM8) is the most popular order here. What sets their noodles apart from peers is their special "kung fu" technique in making the noodles which give the restaurant its name.

Compared to traditional hand-torn noodles, the noodles here are pulled in long and thick strips. In fact it reminded us of Italian pasta pappardelle but thicker, wider and more chewy.

You'd think that the noodles would be too hard - but it actually had the perfect chewiness and springiness for a satisfying bite.

The noodles here are unlike anything we've eaten in the Klang Valley, and the better for it too - in our view.

Broth is sweet and savoury

While the noodle is the real star of the dish - the broth and other ingredients met expectations as well.

The soup had enough savoury base from anchovies with a good amount of sweetness from sayur manis.

The fried anchovies were crispy, and the minced pork/mushrooms were just enough to not overpower the natural flavours of the soup.

Dry Pan Mee is also good

We also enjoyed the Dry Pan Mee here. Utilising the same signature noodles for the dry version, we found it to retain the same chewiness as the soup version. It also absorbed the soy sauce mix very well.

However, the portion for the small bowl might not be enough for a big eater - so we recommend the big portion if you have a huge appetite.

We also found the Pork balls to be quite satisfying as it had a home-cooked flavour to it.

Summary

Ten years after our first visit, we can say that we enjoyed our recent experience here.

Sure - the restaurant might not be the most comfortable, but the unique noodles and well-balanced flavours merit its popularity among locals and pan mee aficionados from afar.
