先ほども書きましたが、今日は世界遺産に登録されている「Seven Sisters」を見たくて「Seaford Head Nature Reserve」というところに行って来ました。我が家から車で１時間ちょっとだと思います。今日はランチのために先ほど書いたパブに先に寄ったので、パブから３０分ほどでした。
Like I wrote in my earlier post, we went to "Seaford Head Nature Reserve" to see "Seven Sisters", which is registered as World Heritage. I think it's about an hour from us although it took us 30 minutes from the pub, where we had lunch.
Seven Sisters というのは、白亜系チョークからなっている海食崖で、白い崖が７つ連なっていることからセブンシスターズと名付けられたそうで、色々な映画などのロケ地にも使われているそうです。Seaford Head Nature Reserve から全体が見られるとわかったので、行ってみました。
Seven Sisters are a series of chalk sea cliffs on the English Channel coast, they are called seven sisters because there are seven cliffs in total. I found out that you can see the whole cliffs from Seaford Head Nature Reserve.
事前にお天気予報をチェックしたところ、今日の方が明日よりお天気が良いようだったので今日に決めたのですが、今朝見ると変わっていて明日の方が良くなっていました（涙）、イギリスのお天気予報、本当に当たらない。でも、まぁ、曇り時々晴れ、のち雨、と言う感じで、わたしたちが歩いていた時は時々陽がさす曇りだったので、雨が降らずに良かったです。
We were checking the weather forecast and decided to go today because it was supposed to be OK weather today and better than tomorrow, but it had changed when I checked this morning and it looks like it would have been much better tomorrow. We really cannot rely on the weather forecast here, even on the day before. Still, it didn't rain when we were there, we saw the sun now and again although it did start raining on our way back.
駐車場からセブンシスターズ全体がが見えるところまで、多分１キロ程度の距離だったので、片道１５分程度でしょうか。世界遺産に登録されるだけあって、絶景でした。そして、日本の方達がバスツアーでいらしているのも見かけました。崖の上なので風が強いことは予想していましたが、それにしても強風で、崖の下の写真を撮ろうと思って崖の淵に近づいた時は風に押されて落ちないかと怖くてギリギリまでは近づけませんでした。気温は２１、２度だったので長袖シャツの上にウィンドブレーカーのようなものを着ていれば寒くはなかったのですが、寒い時期だと本当に寒いと思います。
It was about 1 km from the car park to where you can see the whole seven sisters so I guess it took us about 15 minutes one way. It was a fantastic view. We saw a tour bus full of Japanese people there as well. I expected it to be windy because of the location but it was much more windy than I expected, so much so that I was quite frightened when I walked closer to the edge of the cliff to take photos of the view below, so I couldn't go very close. The temperature was about 21C or 22C so it wasn't too cold with a long sleeve shirt and something like a wind breaker but it must be very cold in winter.
イギリスでよく見かける、こういうトラックのカフェのようなのがあったので、家に向かう前にここでお茶を飲みました。夫がカフェの方に「いつも、こんなに風が強いの？」と聞くと、今日は特別強風だとおっしゃっていたそうです。
They had this little mobile cafe so we had tea/coffee here before heading back home. My husband asked the lady serving them if it was always this windy, and she told him it was particularly windy today.
