Things I Think Ever Kitchen Needs

By Graham Stewart on August 3, 2024

Over the years I have bought and received a number of cooking small appliances. Some I still have other ended up at the charity shop. A lot of the things I bought were because I saw advertisements that said how great they were. Most of those the charity shop received. Rice cooker was something advertised that I really didn't need. I guess if you're making a lot of rice at one time it's good. For making 1 cup of rice at a time it really didn't work. Electric frying pan I used for a few years but they don't work any better than a normal frying pan and take 4 times the space. There are somethings that I think ever kitchen needs and we use all the time.

A slow cooker, ours is about 40 years old and still works great. We use it often and if it breaks we will immediately replace it. Slow cookers are the very best things for doing pot roasts. Hotdogs, if you're making about 4 dozen turn out great.

Deep fryer, we use often because it has a good temperature control that a pot on the stove doesn't. Besides that we really like fish and chips. Our deep fryer can also be used as another slow cooker and also a steamer. I guess when buying a deep fryer you should look at the actual temperature settings it has.

Immersion blender, it replaces a normal blender and has more uses. For small amounts it's easy and also is away easier to clean.

Food processor is something I love. Ours is about 40 years old like our slow cooker. Because it has all the attachments we use it for coleslaw, asian recipes when I make them for family meal. It also gets used for pastry dough, cookie dough, and pasta.

Waffle maker, we have a great one now, thanks to our son Ian. Over the years I have purchased 2 cheap ones, they didn't work very well but were better than not having a waffle maker. Spend the money and get the very best one you can, it will end up cheaper than buying multiple cheap ones.

Stand mixer, my wife's new toy, or perhaps mine. It's a new toy for us and gets used lots. My favourite use is for Yorkshire pudding batter. Because of the quantity I had to make it in 3 batches. With the stand mixer it's just 1 batch.

My new toy for my wife's stand mixer is the pasta roller and cutter. It is, I guess specific, to people who love pasta like my wife and I. Pasta out of a box is ok, but fresh made pasta is a thousand times better. Whether it's is just for spaghetti or fettuccine the difference is drastic. It also makes lasagna easier to make than with the boxed lasagna pasta.

What got me thinking about our small kitchen appliances was because I am making fettuccine for supper. The food and pasta roller/cutter are the tools I am using.
