This a unique little game drenched in the concept of a tedious, pointless white collar office job. It's by indie team Striped Panda Studios and is about boring work in an uptight, corporate office job.
Players can take control of a mid-level manager, specialists, or on-the-job slacker. Naturally, the latter appealed to us a great deal! Thus, we dove on into this one to enjoy its merry take on modern corporate bureaucracy.
Micro-Manage or Slack Off in the World of Dale & Dawson Stationery Supplies
Considering we have features where we write spoof employment law guides (we used to work for a big SME consultancy business FYI), Dale & Dawson Stationery Supplies was a must for us. It's on Steam and it's less than £7 so it's a proper bargain.
Yeah, so you can choose from three roles:
- Manager: Go nuts with your ego and micro-manage. It's your job to hassle employees, complain about profit margns, and demand more productivity.
- Slacker: Here you must goof off, with the goal being to do so undetected. You can get fire to bins, play Minesweeper, or clog the office toilet. All in a hard day's work!
- Specialist: Shred paper, unclog the toilets, and many other menial duties are up to you her.
Developer Striped Panda Studios actually provided gameplay videos of the dev in action on his own game. Which is very meta. But this gives you the vibe for it all.
The goal of the game, even for slackers, is to make the business a success. But as the slacker you do so with the minimum amount of effort... and don't get caught.
Okay, so this is a novelty game. For anyone who's ever worked in an office, it'll give them a kind of vicarious glee in living out some working fantasies they may have dreamt up.
And it's a fun game! One that doesn't outstay its welcome, as there's about two hours of gameplay for the three role types available. Or it may induce nightmares, such as when the manager starts locking people in the toilets for not working hard enough.
Too true to life? Maybe. But it's a sharp, satirical look at office life and one we enjoyed it.
There has been criticism of the proximity voice chat in the game, though, as this has led to the usual toxic gamer abuse (and there seems to be a lack of community support to prevent).
So, fun game. But maybe play it on mute if you don't want a bunch of 35 year old men, behaving like 12 year olds, calling you "gay" and in their tiny little world thinking that's deeply insulting. Ho hum.
