Pik Wah Restaurant, Chinatown

Pik Wah Restaurant

[Non-halal] Located in Chinatown, Pik Wah Restaurant is a popular spot for Chinese banquet meals.

This restaurant has been operating since 1971, and is located inside the Malaysia Basketball Association building. It is only a walking distance from Petaling Street and the new Merdeka 118 skyscraper. You can also easily walk here from the Merdeka MRT station.

Pik Wah Restaurant

We've eaten here for CNY reunions before and found the food generally quite good. A friend recommended fried rice here - and we are on a fried rice/Cantonese noodles streak lately, so we decided to come here with our mum lor.

If you decide to drive here, note that there is a multi-storey carpark that's attached to the building.

The restaurant is located at the basement level - so we recommend parking at the level for older people to access the restaurant easily.

With over 50 years of history, Pik Wah Restaurant still retains that classic Chinese banquet hall vibes. It comes as no surprise that this spot is popular for Chinese reunion meals as it is also located near historical landmarks such as Stadium Merdeka, Methodist Boys School, and The Scouts Association of Malaysia.

Yang Chow Fried Rice

Pik Wah Restaurant

A friend recommended that we check out the fried rice here - so we decided to bring our mum here for an easy Saturday brunch.

We find the portions here to be quite generous.

For RM25, we reckon that the small portion of Yang Chow Fried Rice with Anchovies could comfortably feed three pax on its own.

Pik Wah Restaurant

Our preconditions for a good fried rice - it must have wok hei, is not too dry/wet, and we despise the use of diced carrots and peas, because these are likely of the frozen kind.

Pik Wah Restaurant

The fried rice here met most of the criteria as it had bits of char siew, shrimp, and long beans. The fried small anchovies were the golden touch but we did wish the fried rice had a bit more wok hei, and was slightly on the dry side. Decent - but not in the top three for us.

Cantonese Ying Yong

Pik Wah Restaurant

We prefer the Cantonese Ying Yong (RM25) here.

It was executed well with delicious gravy (thick and savoury) and generously cooked with succulent prawns, fresh squid, and tender pork slices. The noodles had good consistency, and we could taste the wok hei in the fried flat noodles.

All three of us agreed that this was the better dish vs. the fried rice.

Roasted Chicken

Pik Wah Restaurant

For added protein, we opted for the Roast Chicken (RM40 for half bird).

This was good. The chicken was very tender and moist with skin that's still crispy. The bird was served with the sides of plum sauce and seasoned salt.

We also liked the addition of prawn crackers.

Summary

All in, we enjoyed our meal here. The service was attentive, the food was generally good and we really liked the old school vibes here.
