Countdown to Diagon Alley

Oh hey, I'm just over here casually counting down the hours until I get to step foot in DIAGON FREAKING ALLEY!!! Cue the music and pack up your cauldrons because we're riding the Hogwarts Express straight into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! My fiancé and I thought, what better place to honeymoon than Disney World and Harry Potter World?! I mean, yes, there are way more romantic and special places to go. Maldives, Bali, France, Dubai, the list goes on and on. But we weren't exactly sure how open the world would be to travel while we were planning our getaway, so we decided to stay in our home country. In anticipation of our magical trip, I made Hogwarts cinnamon bread ice cream (dairy free) from The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook by Dinah Bucholz. It's literally the best ice cream ever because it combines ice cream + cinnamon swirl bread with Harry Potter!

Cinnamon Swirl Bread

The cinnamon bread I made to put into the ice cream was from the cookbook Magnolia Table Volume 2. You could also use store-bought cinnamon swirl bread in this ice cream. But I had been hankering to bake some homemade bread, so I went for it. Fresh baked bread at home is like the world's best air freshener. 🤤 Plus, you only need about 4 slices of cinnamon bread to go into the ice cream, which leaves you a ton of bread for toast and butter, French toast, and banana PB sandwiches. 🍞

Cinnamon Bread Ice Cream

Ice cream became very popular in England back in the Victorian era, in the mid to late 1800's! Who know Ben and Jerry were that old!? Just kidding! 🍨 Students got to eat ice cream in the Great Hall at Hogwarts on several occasions. But they could also got to indulge in an ice cold treat in Diagon Alley. Harry spent a whole summer eating a chocolate strawberry peanut butter sundae everyday at Florean Fortescue's. So you best believe that's what we'll be getting when we go, in their souvenir glass and everything! 🍦

This "cinnamon bread ice cream" flavor may have come about by accident. Perhaps a cook had a few stale pieces of bread and they decided to plop into their custard or sweet cream to make cinnamon bread ice cream? I must say, it is a marvelous invention. Each bite ensure the most luxurious creaminess alongside a playful chew of toasted cinnamon bread!

Put yourself right in Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade from Harry Potter with this delicious Hogwarts Cinnamon Bread Ice Cream (Dairy Free)!

    • 4 slices of cinnamon bread, homemade or store-bought
    • 2 cups full-fat coconut milk
    • ½ tsp xanthum gum
    • 2 cups non-dairy milk of your choice (I used oat milk)
    • 1 cup packed brown sugar
    • 5 egg yolks
    1. Crack your egg yolks into a medium bowl and set aside.

    2. In a medium saucepan on medium heat, combine the coconut milk, xanthum gum, dairy-free milk, and brown sugar. Whisk the mixture constantly until it's hot and steaming, but not bubbling.

    3. Slowly pour one cup of the hot milk mixture into the bowl with egg yolks, while constantly whisking. This will temper the eggs and bring them up to the temperature of the milk mixture without cooking the eggs.

    4. Pour the egg mixture in to the saucepan with the rest of the milk. Continue whisking on medium heat until it has thickened and is steaming (but don't get it too hot to the point where it begins to bubble).

    5. Pour the mixture through a sieve or strainer into a large bowl. Cover with plastic cling wrap, allowing the plastic wrap to dip into the bowl and touch as much surface of the top of the mixture as possible, to help prevent a skin from forming on the top as it cools.

Allow it to cool to room temperature, then chill in the fridge for at least 8 hours, or overnight.

    6. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

In a food processor, add the bread slices and blend it until it turns into crumbs.

Spread out the crumbs on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for about 10 minutes, until the crumbs are dark brown.

    7. Prepare your ice cream maker per the manufacturer's instructions, and add the chilled mixture to mix it into ice cream.

Add in the toasted bread crumbs about two minutes before the ice cream is done.

    8. Serve immediately for soft-serve ice cream, or freeze it for later. Enjoy!
