Today's recipe for Crumb Coffee Cake comes from another one of Grandma's old church cookbooks. I'm sure the name comes from the fact that it's make like - a crumb cake. As you can see by the recipe itself, my mom had first made this one in 1970, and SHE thought it was "good". If you're having weekend company any time soon (say - Easter), you might want to have this recipe at the ready! Maybe you need something to bring to a baby or wedding shower. Maybe you just want to enjoy a treat with your afternoon coffee. No matter what you need this one for, you're going to love it! Grandma and Grandpa were pretty big on afternoon coffee, and I think, as far as they were concerned, one could never have too many recipes for coffee cake. They may be heading to someone's house for afternoon coffee in this photo!

They had so many family members and so many friends to have coffee with - I've never seen anything like it. They loved to entertain, and they did in fact, entertain about 10 the week before they moved to assisted living when they were both in their mid 80's! Gosh, I miss them. 🙂

Crumb Coffee Cake

Here is the recipe as I made it:

Crumb Coffee Cake

Sift together:

2 1/2 cups flour

3/4 cup sugar

1 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon salt

Add:

3/4 cup salad oil (I used avocado)

Mix well and set aside 3/4 cup of this mixture.

To the first part add:

1 cup sour milk (I add about 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar to the milk to make it sour)

1 teaspoon baking soda

Beat well.

Add:

1 egg

Mix all together.

Pour into greased 9" x 13" pan.

Add to the 3/4 cup of first mixture set aside:

2 teaspoons cinnamon

1/2 cup chopped nuts (I used pecans)

Sprinkle over top of batter.

Bake at 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes.
