I always try to avoid watching anything with a heavy feel to it. I don't like watching anything heavy or something that will take an emotional toll on me. But when I saw the thumbnail for The Barrier and after reading the synopsis, I was intrigued. It had a familiar feel to it. I guess because the plot of the show seemed similar to our current condition. 😁

Deets:

The Barrier (Spanish: La valla) is a Spanish dystopian drama TV series created by Daniel Écija and stars Unax Ugalde, Olivia Molina and Eleonora Wexler. It first aired on Attesplayer Premium in January 2020, and debuted internationally in September 2020 on Netflix.

Plot:

The show was set in Spain in the time 2040, 20 years after World War III. Spain is under a dystopian government where the country is divided into two sectors by a wall or the barrier. On one side of the wall lives the rich, the entitled and the powerful; while the poor, despondent and underprivileged lived on the other side.

Spain is also combatting a pandemic caused by disease that is very much like COVID-19. The disease starts with flu-like symptoms and progresses rapidly to cause death. Strict health measures are implemented and the entire population must abide. Research is being conducted to search for a cure. However, the cure comes with a price and a family defies all odds to get back one of their own.

My Thoughts:

So the series hits close to home because it has all the feels of the COVID-19 pandemic. Everything had a familiar to it, minus the physical wall and the abduction of children. But the wall may be existing in our time, albeit metaphorically. 😅

Anyway, I was entranced by the show from the get-go. I love the Spanish language. I took a class back in college because it was required and had a fun time learning the language. I'm not fluent, though. But I can get by. 😅 Anyway, the entire series will really suck you in. The plot is something new with so many twists and turns. It will make you so frustrated at times. It will also keep you up way into the wee hours of the morning because you'd want to find out what happens next. There are so many things going on in this series. I was afraid that the ending will be mediocre because that what happens when the build up is good. Sometimes the ending is not given enough attention. But the ending was really satisfying. Although there was a scen that kinda left me hanging and made me wondered if there will be a next season.

I'm not that familiar with the actors because this is the first Spanish show I watched. But I loved the acting of each and every one of them. There was not a moment where I thought that another person could have done the part better. The characters all made an impression and they really stuck to me.

La Valla is a nice series to watch. It's not as heavy as I expected but it was definitely intriguing. When you watch it, you have to be ready for a suspenseful and thrilling ride.
