Spicy Swede Chips – Air fryer or Oven

Swede (also known as Rutabaga) is that knobbly root vegetable that you don't know what to do with that comes in your veggie box. Make it into some yummy Spicy Swede Chips in the air fryer or roast up in the oven, and never wonder what to make with it again.

In late autumn and all through winter, swede, known as Rutabaga in North America, makes an appearance in veg boxes and in markets, and we all wonder what on earth to make apart from swede mash! (Which is great and all, but you can only eat it so many times)

Swede makes a delicious soup, like this Classic Swede (Rutabaga) and Carrot Soup, but did you know that you can also make it into yummy chips? Just spice it up, and pop it into the air fryer or oven for an easy side or snack. The chips would make a great addition to a Thanksgiving or Christmas table alongside these Marinated Brussel Sprouts with Sticky Balsamic or my famous Savoury Christmas Filo Wreath Pie, or better yet, with this Vegan Mushroom Bourguignon Pie.

🍟Ingredients

It's so easy to make swede chips! You can vary the spices to your own taste.

Ingredients for swede chips
  • Swede (also known as Rutabaga or neep) is a root vegetable that is a cross between a turnip and a cabbage. It has a subtle earthy flavor that to me tastes a little like broccoli stems.
  • Olive Oil - just a little to get the swede caramelised on the outside.
  • Flakey Sea salt- to taste
  • Seasonings: - eg Chilli, Smoked Paprika, Ras el Hanout, Baharat, Fajita seasoning

See recipe card for quantities.

👩‍🍳Instructions

Just a few steps are needed for making swede chips!

Peel and cut the swede into chip shapes.

1.Use a vegetable peeler and peel off the tough outer of the swede. Chop into chip shapes.

Swede chips in a plate, with seasoning on them, being mixed in to cover them.

2.Put the chips into a bowl, drizzle oil over and season with your favourite spices. I find using my (clean) hands is the easiest way to cover the chips in an even coating of oil and seasoning.

Swede chips in an air fryer basket, ready to cook.

3. Add the chips to the air fryer basket. Or if oven baking, in a single layer on a lined oven tray.

A bowl of swede chips, ready to eat.

4 Place in an airfryer on 180C/ 350 fahrenheit for 10-15 minutes. Or place in the oven for 25-35 minutes until golden and crispy.

Hint: Ovens and air fryer sizes vary, so be sure to check on your chips half way through and mix them around. Adjust the cook time to suit your tastes (Extra crispy needs longer!)

🌶Substitutions and Variations

Choose different spices according to the meal you're serving, or your own personal tastes. Some nice options are:

  1. Baharat- a spice mix used throughout the Middle East. I like it because it's savoury and fragrant with a subtle kick. Made with paprika, cardamom, cumin, and nutmeg amongst other spices.
  2. Fajita Spice- For some reason I always have a jar of something called Fajita spice in my spice cupboard, and I'm not sure how it gets there. It is great for sprinkling on chips though!
  3. Smoked Paprika and Oregano- one of my go-to mixtures. Takes the spice in a Spanish direction.

🔪Equipment

This recipe is great made in an air fryer. I love my Ninja Foodie Grill and Air fryer, so can personally recommend that! Otherwise you can just use your oven. Either method will create great results.

🥫Storage

Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Either reheat in your air fryer, or add to a hash or sandwich.

❓FAQ

Is swede the same as a rutabaga?

Yep, they are the same thing! Swede is the common name in the UK. They are also known as neeps in Scotland, and as a rutabaga in the USA.

Can I use other root vegetables in this recipe?

Absolutely. Parsnips or carrots can be cooked in the exact same way.
