Some of the harvest over the last two months, starting with potatoes and strawberries from the polytunnel.
In the two months since the last posting here, there was a long hot dry spell that lasted for a good portion of May/June, followed by the wettest July on record, and the heavy rain is still with us, as of early August.
Elsewhere in the world, extreme weather events are taking an enormous toll. As a consequence food harvests are being impacted. We can see this on a micro-level in our little west-of-Ireland garden, where the tomatoes in the polytunnel are still a way off ripening for want of sunshine and similarly the chilli plants are weeks behind in growth, the outside cucumbers haven't developed and seem unlikely to do so, the courgettes are struggling, confused early carrots bolted en masse, onions are tiny and still in the ground, but thankfully potato blight looks to have largely passed us by.
Assuming that the weather may be similar next year, a strategy to maximise production in the polytunnel seems wise (this year it is given over almost entirely to tomatoes), so that there will at least be a more reliable supply of foods of different varieties, albeit in smaller quantities.
