Pyeongyang Nengmyeon

at Gwangpyeong

(Starfield Hanam)

-Sinjang, Hanam, Gyeonggi, Republic of Korea-

w SYJ

Starfield Hanam is a shopping mall.  One of the biggest in the country, with shops ranging from bargain to luxury, mostly international brands (Korean malls predominantly host local companies).

The meeting was scheduled in the midst of a pop-up sale held by one of our competitors, just outside of the department store.

We were in the mall to meet with reps from Shinsegae Department Store and discuss future opportunities for collaboration.

Starfield City Wirye, a much smaller mall near home, features the same food court branding (see 11.224 Stir-Fried Morning Glory in Oyster Sauce).

Afterwards, we went to the food court for lunch.

Not a full service restaurant.

Gwangpyeong is a Korean restaurant.  Specializes in Pyeongyang-style naeng myeon, also pork galbi  - a combination that I've only encountered once before (see 4.362 How I Earned a Free Bowl of Mul Naeng Myeon).  Founded in 2022 with a restaurant in Seoul, now expanding with an outlet in Starfield Hanam.

Applying the rating rubric used in my Seoul-Searching project (see SSPYSP):

TOPPINGS: Sliced beef shank + pickled radish + pear + 1/2 boiled egg + sliced scallion + chili flakes.  Not a fan of chili or scallions as MNM garniture, also pear.

BROTH: Clean, a hint of sweetness.  Little beef flavor.

NOODLES: Firm, like al dente pasta, but perhaps a bit too dense.  Strong buckwheat flavor, though otherwise somewhat bland.

CONCLUSION:  Good.  If our neighborhood Starfield had a branch of Gwangpyeong, I'd go there all the time.  Pricey at 15,000 won, especially as the broth wasn't particularly beefy.

So poetically coincidental that the featured dish of this is MNM.

This is GMTD's 5,000th post.

At 100: "For this 100th post – who thought that I'd make it so far? – I considered doing something special, but then I had to remind myself that the blog is intended to capture what I eat on a daily basis, for better or for worse" (see 1.100 Fried Chicken with Stuffing).

At 500: "Post 500!!  I can't believe that I've made it this far, never once missing a photo, all photos taken with the same iPhone.  (Now if I could only put these powers of stick-to-it-iveness to something more useful…..)" (see 2.135 Cheddar-Jack Quesadillas with Grilled Chicken and Roasted Peppers).

At 1,000: ""This is GMTD's 1,000th post.  While the blog isn't about adventurous eating, just an on-going record of what I happen to eat on any given day, I suppose that the randomness of red ants as the 1,000th item is appropriate" (see 3.269 Fried Beef with Red Ants) (actually, the 1,000th post was the next day at 3.270 Fried Water Buffalo with Snow Peas).

Funny to think that those initial milestones came in the first three cycles, then nothing for eleven cycles, and here we are in Cycle 14.  5,000 will be the final round milestone, because the next one would be 10,000, but that's not going to happen - hypothetically, it would be achieved in Cycle 28, on 23 May 2037 (a few months shy of my 65th birthday).  As speculated at the outset of this cycle (14.001 Tong Dak), GMTD will likely conclude either at the end Cycle 16, in which case the blog will have posted a total of 5,844 posts, or at the end of Cycle 21, in which case the blog will have posted a total of 7,760 posts.

Though sometimes a daily grind, GMTD has documented every important/fun event during the most eventful/fun period of my life.

In 2019, as I was increasingly burned out in my position at WHO WPRO, I'd begun to consider a transfer to WHO HQ in Geneva.  But then the pandemic struck, and transfers were off the table, so I resigned from the organization altogether, and retired from my career path, and went another way.  However, I can't help but think of GMTD content that could've been generated had I gone to Switzerland, how many more countries would I have visited, how many new dishes would I have tried?
