The Heritage Cafe in Ruddington is located at the Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre next to Rushcliffe Country Park.
Its a great little spot tucked away in South Notts and quite popular with the local ramblers, walkers and volunteers at the park and centre.
We had come here to sample their dish of the day which I heard was an absolute bargain at £6 including a pudding. For once I was being taken on a MyFoodHunt expedition and I was happy to be along for the ride.
However, things did not quite go to plan as I got distracted by the chalkboard offering breakfasts, an option which I find almost impossible to pass by (so I didn't).
Luckily to complete the original mission one of us did stick to the plan getting the daily special and I obviously went off plan scoffing a great big brekkie.
So we have found ourselves with Tale of two meals
BREAKFAST MENU
The breakfast menu was fairly simple offering an All Day Breakfast for £9.80 and a Small Breakfast for £7.40.
The All Day Breakfast was listed as "2 Sausage, 2 Bacon, 2 Fried Eggs, 1 Hash Brown, Fried Bread, Beans, Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Black Pudding and 2 Slices of Toast" now obviously that was far too much food but I was going to give it a good go.
The smaller alternative of '1 Bacon, 1 Sausage, 1 Egg, Bean or Tomatoes, with a slice of Toast and Fried Bread' just wasn't in the same league and hardly seemed worth contemplating, so I didn't
When I asked if they were still doing breakfast the lady took one look at me and shouted 'Large breakfast' back to the kitchen.
Fair comment and assumption really and it avoided any pretence that I might have chosen the lighter option 🤣
ALL-DAY BREAKFAST
Vast and hearty were my first thoughts when the breakfast arrived at my table. They had managed to fill every inch of the plate with stuff overlapping all over the place.
Some people get triggered when beans and tomato juice intertwine and touch the eggs. Those people would have a meltdown here. Happily I am not one of them and I am not a fussy bugger either so I take what I am given and as long as it is edible I will scoff it down.
The bacon was very crispy as were the hash brown and the fried bread all of which I thoroughly enjoyed. I would have liked more of the fried slice perhaps in exchange for the well buttered toast of which I struggled to eat in entirety
I wasn't keen on the sausages, I like them to be the star of the breakfast plate but sadly these ones were a bit of a sideshow and they were so flabby I struggled a litte. Perhaps if they had been fried a bit more crispy or had a little more solid meat inside them I could have happier, either way I still ate them.
The eggs with crispy skirts and just runny yolks were welcomed and once perched on my toast went down a treat. The black pudding was tasty, some flecks of white fat as I like and most importantly was part of the package and not an optional extra
The bean and tinned tomato melded together with the mushrooms adding wetness to the plate mostly being mopped up with my toast but some with the crispy hash brown and fat laden fried slice
Overall an absolute belter of a breakfast, some bits good some bits not so great but all in all one to shout about about and recommend trying. If you like that sort of thing. If you are fussy don't bother we can't be friends 😂😎
If you didn't want a cooked breakfast you could get all sorts of combinations of breakfast items in a cob, all the usual suspects bacon, sausage and egg.
As I waited for my breakfast to be cooked I watched one man wolf down two cobs filled to the brim with slices of fried bacon. It looked to be a good feed, he also had two sausages on the plate which looked a lot crispier than the ones I was to receive. Pondering it back maybe I should have asked for mine to be dead crispy too. Next time maybe 😎
Anyhow if you peer at the bottom of the menu board you will see a prompt to 'see today's special board' for the dish of the day the prompt to start the second part of today's story
DISH OF THE DAY
I was told in advance that the speciality of the house or cafe is their dish of the day which they make from whatever they have left.
Today on the counter it seemed to be some sort of pie topped off with roasted potatoes. A quick enquiry was that it was indeed a pie filled with Turkey and Pork in a gravy sauce with vegetables.
Just the sort of thing my partner in dine loves so they were ordering a helping of that for their lunch. Mission completed 😎🤣😘
PIE OF THE DAY
If you thought that my all day breakfast was a mammoth feast you will certainly be blown away with the huge portion of pie served up for one person for lunch
The pie was filled with loads of soft well cooked meat all falling apart as you forked through it, peas and carrots were also part of the party, as was a large Yorkshire pudding that appeared from somewhere as well as a boat load of gravy poured over the top.
The potato topping was a layer of roast potatoes cut into rectangles, I am not exaggerating as you can see it in the picture but this portion came with at least 10 roast spuds on top, possibly more as some seemed to have slipped beneath as it was laden onto the plate.
With a meal like this you are going to need a good appetite and probably will only need to eat once! It's a bargain as well as you also got a slice of cake for pudding although I didn't see anyone eat their cake and we took our slice home with us.
I can see now why this place is so popular and another time I will play the game and have the daily special. I know it makes a lot of sense! 🤣😂
The Heritage Cafe is located at the Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre on Mere Way, Ruddington, NG11 6JS. You can park at the centre but you can also park at Rushcliffe Country Park which is just a few minutes walk away.
If you like old trains and buses you can see them here in all their glory and there is a lot of transport memorabilia in and around the cafe, including an old bus stop and the train station.
When we were dining a lot of the volunteers were in having their lunch, it was like an meeting of men in sheds. If you have any interest in that sort of thing you could probably spend a happy afternoon listening to their stories 😎
