7-Chai Ipoh Hor Fun

[Non-halal] When discussing the best hor fun in KL, 7-Chai Ipoh For Hun is a name that often crops up among peers.

This restaurant has its humble beginnings as a stall next to the popular Peter's Pork Noodles in Brickfields, before moving to Pudu and finally settling in at the current shoplot in Pandan Perdana.

After hearing about the amazing hor fun so often, we finally made our way to 7-Chai last weekend. So did the dish meet our expectations? Read on to find out.

7-Chai Ipoh Hor Fun in Pandan Perdana

7-Chai Ipoh Hor Fun is located in Pandan Perdana - a commercial/residential area that straddles in between Cheras and Ampang.

7-Chai Ipoh Hor Fun is located in a commercial square that is populated with lots of cheap eats - judging by the number of kopitiams - to serve the local community.

Servicing the breakfast and lunch crowd, 7-Chai is open from 6.30am until 2.30pm daily. We were able to secure a table immediately upon arriving at 1pm on a Saturday. And thankfully, they had not sold out any of their food then.

7-Chai Ipoh Hor Fun

The menu here is quite simple. 7-Chai Ipoh Hor Fun serves Ipoh-style hor fun in both soup and dry versions with a choice topping of shredded chicken, smooth poached chicken, or prawn dumplings.

7-Chai also serves curry noodles (dry and soup version) as well as Hainanese chicken rice.

Our mission was clear for this visit: order two bowls of dry and soup Ipoh hor fun topped with smooth chicken breast.

For only RM8 per bowl - the Hor Fun Noodles were truly a bang for the buck. The portion of noodles and chicken were enough to keep us satiated for hours.

How about the taste? We found 7-Chai's broth for the Hor Fun soup to be quite balanced in terms of savoury and sweetness. We could taste the hint of rock sugar, but there was an unmistakable layer of prawn umami in the broth.

It's not as savoury as the one at Ipoh Ipoh Kafe, or as sweet as the one at MJ Wang. This is not to say 7-Chai's broth is middling. It's just balanced in a satisfactory way.

Chicken is smooth and tender

On that note, the chicken breast is truly one of the best we've eaten with hor fun.

It's extraordinarily smooth and tender - which says a lot for white meat, and goes so well with the slippery-smooth hor fun.

Dry noodles is a revelation

We were also positively surprised by the Dry Hor Fun here.

Instead of the usual dark soy sauce mix, the gravy here is light in colour with a delicate touch of soy sauce sweetness and scallion oil. That is to say - it's really yummy!

The noodles are topped with lots of fried garlic bits, which worked so well with the smooth chicken.

Succulent prawn dumplings

We can't help but also sing praises for the Prawn Wontons that are of incredible value at RM1.60 each.

Despite the price, the dumplings are generously filled with whole prawns that are naturally succulent and seasoned with just a touch of salt.

Summary

There's nothing to criticise here, really.

We enjoyed 7-Chai's food as they are delicious (good hor fun, smooth chicken meat, nice gravy, amazing prawn dumplings) and are incredible value for the price (30-40% cheaper than the ones in PJ).

So if you're still unclear - the verdict is RECOMMENDED!
