We were looking for a quiet place for lunch to catch up with our relatives and the family staying in JB recommended this cafe which is less crowded with decent food
The cafe is popular for its cheesecakes as they are named Cheelicious but they also offer a range of Western and local hot food
The cafe has been around for at least 12 years so you can tell the cafe's age from the entrance tiles to the interior furnishings. While the furnishings are dated and used well over time, the overall atmosphere is still clean and relatively comfortable. There are both external and interior seating to fit at least 50 diners at any one time
Their menu is extensive and targeted at the younger audience with local delights like fried bee hoon, nasi lemak and fried rice. For older diners looking for soupy dishes, there are fewer choices as I could only order the fish soup bee hoon for my mum
Their hot teas are all served in small glass pots with 2 small tea cups and any additional cups will come at a charge. They have the usual tea selections with some flower tea which is more suitable for diners who cannot take caffeine. The drinks are pretty decent and the price was also decent
I had the seafood aglio aglio pasta where the serving was mid-size and just enough for a small eater. Those who eat a hearty meal will find this insufficient. The pasta was cooked slightly al dente and quite lightly tossed with olive oil and some chopped parsley. Personally, I found the dish too bland with light seasonings of salt. The dish was served with prawns and squid which were fresh and crunchy but also very lightly seasoned
I ordered the fish soup rice vermicelli which came served with bittergroud slices. After having my pasta, I did not have high hopes for the fish soup and expected mediocre food from the cafe but I was pleasantly surprised. While I cannot compare them to a specialised fish soup stall from the hawker centre, the soup is light yet flavourful with a nice natural sweetness from the fish. The bitter groud was cooked till soft and no bitterness affected the soup. The only downside was the fish was full of small bones which is really bad for diners. My mum could hardly eat the fish and we had to forgo the fish and just eat the noodles and vegetables in fear of getting choked by the bones
The highlight of the meal is definitely the cheesecake which we ordered for desserts. The 2 more popular ones are the cranberry nut cheesecake and the creme brulee cheesecake. The cheesecake consistency was thick, creamy and extremely cheesy. The creme brulee one was sweeter due to the burnt sugar on the top whereas the cranberry one was well balanced with a burst of sourness from the fruit and nuttiness from the nuts
Overall, I would highly recommend the cafe just for its cheesecake if you are a lover of thick heavy cheesecake like me. The beverages are also decent but the food is mediocre so I would treat this as a dessert cafe which is good and not overcrowded with customers so you can have good conversations
