I do like a good fish and chip and when you do a search, Lad and Dad definitely comes out as one of the places in Singapore making decent Fish and Chips
After having one of the best fish and chips in Greenwich, UK, the only place with decent fish and chips in Singapore was Big Fish Small Fish in Bugis and you can read about my review here. You might wonder why did I not give Lad and Dad a try since they are on the list? In fact, I have been wanting to try them but they are either closed or not open whenever I visited and they also had some bad reputation of attitude service so I procrastinated visiting them
I finally found time to visit them one day while having an extremely strong craving for fish and chips. Located in Tanjung Pagar, Lad and Dad has limited tables for service both indoors and outdoors. The place has a slight flavour of your neighbourhood English pub with limited spaces but a huge beer and bar counter for drinking
They provided your condiments like ketchup, salt, malt vinegar, HP sauce as well as mustard for the dishes
For drinks, since it was early and we had no intention of drinking, we went for iced tea and instead of the usual tea, they served iced Earl Grey tea which was surprisingly refreshing and great with the greasy pub food
The first thing served was Fish and Chips with fat chips, mashed peas and a small side of mayonnaise dip. There were 2 pieces of fish per serving and the crust was fat and crispy without an overly thick batter. The fish is tender and succulent without being over-seasoned so you can taste the natural flavours of the fish which are fresh and sweet. The meat was also flakey and not mushy which is a must for all fish and chips. I personally like peas so mashed peas were a good addition to the dish and are very English
The other thing that caught my eye was these pigs in blankets which are fresh pork sausages wrapped with smoked bacon and drizzled with maple glaze. For the price of SGD 14, there are 2 skewers of sausages which is good for 2 persons as each sausage is bite size. I like that the sausage was not too dry and the bacon added a strong umami flavour which balanced out with the maple glaze to give you the sweet spot between savoury and sweet. It would be a great snack to have with beer
The last thing we ordered was the scotch egg which is a very English dish and can be found in most pubs. It is a pickled soft egg yolk wrapped with pork sausage meat covered with a breaded crust and served with purple slaw. This dish was delicious with a nice runny yolk which gave the meat a creamy sauce combining the flavours extremely well. The purple slaw added a tinge of acidity which was nice to help cut the greasiness of the meat
Overall, I do feel the dishes served at Lad and Dad is authentically English and reminds me of the good food served in English pubs. There are some more items on their menu which I am excited to try out and I will definitely visit them again. On just their fish and chips, I am torn between them and big fish and small fish and both really did a good dish of Fish and Chips
