Let God Be Your Light and Choose Joy

By Elizabeth Brooks on June 29, 2024

In the midst of life's tempests and trials, it's easy to find ourselves ensnared by anxiety and despair. The world around us can seem fraught with darkness, leaving our spirits weary and our hearts heavy. Yet, amidst this turmoil, there lies a profound, enduring truth captured in the words of Psalm 94:19, "When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy."

This passage serves as a beacon, reminding us that God's presence is a source of comfort and joy that transcends our earthly struggles. It acknowledges the reality of our fears and anxieties but also proclaims the transformative power of divine consolation. God's comfort doesn't merely mask our pain; it renews our spirit, bringing joy where there was once sorrow.

Just as a small flame can dispel the darkness of a vast room, so too can God's light illuminate our lives, even in the darkest of times. And like a flame that grows stronger with the wind, our faith can deepen amidst trials, fanned by the breath of the Holy Spirit.

In today's world, it's easy to lose sight of this joy. The nightly news, the pace of life, the cycle of bad news—these can all dim our inner light. The lyrics of the song that speaks to this very struggle, "I choose joy," remind us that joy is not merely a feeling but a choice, a stand we take against the darkness. It's a declaration that, despite the shadows that may fall, we will let God's light guide us and choose joy.

Choosing joy means allowing it to move us—to inspire us, to change us, and to lead us out of the valley of shadow. It means stepping into the light with God by our side, finding that joy that dwells deep within our hearts, placed there by our Creator, a source that never runs dry.

As we reflect on the message of Psalm 94:19 and the declaration of choosing joy, let us open our hearts to the Holy Spirit. Let us pray for the strength to raise our voices, to testify of God's goodness, and to make that conscious choice each day: to let joy move us, to let it be our light in the darkness.

A Song to Inspire:
The song "I Choose Joy" captures this journey beautifully. It speaks of a soul's cry for strength, a plea to God to rekindle the fire within, and a declaration to choose joy amidst life's battles. May its message resonate with you, serving as a reminder that, no matter the circumstances, you have the power to choose joy, to let it move you, and to step into the light with faith and hope.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, in times of anxiety and despair, remind us of Your eternal presence. When the weight of the world threatens to crush our spirits, let Your consolation bring us joy. Help us to remember that, with You, we have the strength to choose joy, to let it guide us through the darkest nights. Thank you for being our light, our comfort, and our hope. Amen.
