When customers shop this is something they might not consider. They'll just shop.
As there may be some customers who plan in advance and others who buy on impulse what motivated them to purchase items is personal.
People want things. People needs things. And shopping may satisfy both.
Regardless, shopping that seems to get the customer going is one that's personal to them. They may or may not need the items, but maybe they just need the experience.
Shopping at its core is less about purchasing and more about experiencing.
