Kean Fatt Restaurant

Kean Fatt Restaurant in SS3

[Non-halal] For years, Kean Fatt Restaurant in SS3 has been known for its pork noodles.

To be honest, we tried the pork noodles here many years ago and found it not to our preference. We remembered it to be too reliant on soy sauce to flavour the soup.

This was in contrast to our favourite pork noodles stall in Siong Pin Restaurant nearby (see post), which is a childhood favourite of ours as Max's family home is just around the corner.

A few years back, we also learned about the stall here in Kean Fatt which served a decent bowl of pan mee.

Pan Mee in Kean Fatt Restaurant

We decided to check out Chun Kee pan mee stall (which used to operate a second stall at Restoran Kim Seng in Section 17 but had since shuttered) as we were craving a good bowl of mee hoon kueh.

Little did we know - the stall had seen a surge of interest as it was recently highlighted on social media (which we only found out when writing this post lol). Hence, our 30-minute wait for pan mee on a Sunday afternoon.

Pan mee is decent

We could tell that the workers at the stall were very flustered when we were there.

It seemed that they had gotten a few orders wrong and one or two customers were losing their nerve.

No matter - we had anticipated this and patiently waited for our bowls of Traditional Pan Mee to be served.

And was it good?

We thought the pan mee was quite decent. While there was a slight variance in quality between our two bowls - we found the soup to be adequately seasoned with anchovies and enough sweetness from the sayur manis.

Is this the sweetest/most tastiest pan mee broth? Probably not - but it had enough umami, with some sliced mushrooms as flavour.

The fried anchovies were crispy, which was good.

The stall is known for its hand-pulled mee hoon kueh. This enhanced the noodles' chewiness, but we wished it was thinner.

Pork noodles surprised us

While waiting for our Pan Mee, we decided to order a bowl of Pork Noodles (with an added egg).

This surprised us! Unlike our experience years ago, we actually found the broth to be naturally savoury-sweet without any trace of soy sauce.

Was there a change in the recipe/owner? The minced pork, intestines and liver were cooked well with the right texture and the onsen egg gives the broth a decent creaminess.

Summary

This visit proves that some places deserve a second chance, and you can't really believe the social media hype.

While the pork noodles surprised on the upside, we still prefer the stall at Siong Pin. The pan mee here was also just decent.

There's nothing sinister about it.  Again - taste is very subjective and you have to trust your own preferences.

For us, we are unlikely to return for these two stalls here. And it's totally OK if our preferences differ.
