This tower-defense (in space!) game is another Playdate gem. Created by LuBu, the title features a striking visual style, some cool music, and it's addictive.
You have to strategically plan out your satellites in orbit around planets, which then blast away enemies. Sounds simple, but it soon gets bloody intense. We like it a lot! 🛰️
The Space-Based Strategy of satOlite Explosions and Orbits
Okay, so the Playdate offers a mixture of crank-based gaming mechanics alongside often deceptively simple concepts. But as with the best games on this yellow system (Mega Dystopia Micro Architect - MDMA for example), this one is more complicated than it first appears.
You get a brief little intro to do, then you're into the action! The idea is to use the Playdate's crank to place satellites. Like this.

You need to make money to buy more of them, but there are a different batch you can deploy. Each offering something strategic for certain situations.
But they all do roughly the same thing. This! Boom!

This bloke called Mayor Forbett is on hand to offer you guidance. That and the computer assistant Plan.NET, who provide tips and... wait for it... banter.

With all that in place you need to manage resources, deploy satellites, and defend your planets. Enemy ships come in thick and fast, so you need to work quickly and try varying strategies to save the day.
As with so many Playdate games, the pick-up-and-play element here is great. The thing here is satOlite is trying new things, within a diddy yellow handheld device, and making it work like a charm.
It's addictive and manages to offer up variation and reasons to keep coming back for more. If you own a Playdate, definitely worth some of your space-based interest.
