Taiwan is a country famous for bubble tea and you can find a bubble tea shop every 10 steps in popular tourist areas giving you choice anxiety. On top of bubble tea, The Taiwanese love their ice desserts in all forms so there are various traditional and new modern dessert stores in all corners of the city
I was in the Xi Men Ding area late at night and looking for desserts to quench my thirst and also cool down from the summer heat when I passed this crowded dessert shop. Looking at the Google reviews, we went ahead for this shop compared to the many others along the same street
The interior is simple and fuss-free with big lighted signboards of the signature desserts. You can get a laminated menu from the counter and write down your order with markers before making and paying for the order at the counter. The cafe is extremely packed and even after customers leave, new ones arrive
The service is fast and we got our order in less than 10 minutes after we placed our order. One of the signatures is the mango shaved ice. Customers get the option to customise the shaved ice and the choices are normal shaved ice, milk shaved ice or fruit flavour shaved ice. My original plan was to get the strawberry milk shaved ice, but it was sold out, so I settled for the next best thing: the mango milk shaved ice. The dessert was drizzled with condensed milk and topped with huge chunks of fresh mango fruit. With extremely fine and smooth shaved ice which melts in your mouth, each mouthful was a delight in the hot weather. The mango was sweet and fragrant and paired perfectly with the milk-shaved ice for a well-balanced dessert
We also had mango shaved ice with melon fruits which was not something we see in Singapore. The mango shaved ice has a light mango flavour and is not overly sweet. The balls of melons were from the honeydew and not sweet enough in my opinion. I felt the sweetness in the ice might have overpowered the melon fruit. I feel that the fruit shaved ice would probably go better with the same fruit topping in order not to overshadow the other fruit taste
Overall, this is a fuss-free dessert place which is not really meant for chilling as the crowd is constantly changing and staff are busy churning out new orders. There is a pressure to finish your dessert fast and move on which is not an issue to me since we wanted a place with good desserts to keep cold from the humid and hot weather. The desserts tasted great and did the job of quenching our thirst so I am not too bothered by the stressful environment
