During a recent grocery trip, I came across something intriguing at my local Japanese supermarket, a Samgyeopsal set from Moranbong. As someone who enjoys Korean BBQ, I was curious to see how this set would bring the authentic taste of Samgyeopsal into my home kitchen. Here's how it turned out. If you're unfamiliar with Samgyeopsal, it's a popular Korean BBQ dish known for its grilled pork belly. Learn more about Samgyeopsal here.
Unboxing Moranbong's Samgyeopsal Set
The Moranbong Samgyeopsal set includes three key sauces:
- 旨塩漬け込みだれ (Umashio Tsuke Komi Dare): A savory marinade for the pork belly with a hint of sourness, possibly from lemon.
- 辛味だれ (Karami Dare): A spicy sauce to mix with sliced onion leek (ねぎ) for added flavor.
- サムジャン (Ssamjang): A thick, flavorful paste made from fermented soybeans, perfect for dipping the pork.
This set is perfect for preparing a meal for 2 to 3 people, making it an ideal choice for an intimate dinner or a small family gathering
How I Prepared Samgyeopsal at Home
Step 1: Marinate the Pork Belly
I used about 400g of pre-cut pork belly slices, which were thinner than the traditional Samgyeopsal cut. I mixed the pork with the 旨塩漬け込みだれ (Umashio Tsuke Komi Dare) marinade from the set. The marinade had a distinct sour smell, possibly from lemon, which added an interesting twist to the flavor profile. I let the pork marinate for about 15 minutes.
Step 2: Mix the Spicy Onion Leek
While the pork was marinating, I sliced some onion leek (ねぎ) and mixed it with the 辛味だれ (Karami Dare) spicy sauce. This simple mix added a nice kick to the dish, balancing the richness of the pork with a bit of heat.
Step 3: Cook the Pork Belly
I heated a pan and cooked the marinated pork slices. Despite the thinner cut, the pork browned nicely and cooked quickly, filling the kitchen with a savory aroma.
Step 4: Serve and Enjoy
Once the pork was cooked, I served it with fresh lettuce leaves, the spicy onion leek mix, サムジャン (Ssamjang) dipping sauce, and added a side of kimchi for extra flavor. Although I didn't take a picture of the Ssamjang packets, they were essential in bringing the dish together. The pork tasted good, but I believe it would be even better with thicker slices. However, the combination of the onion leek, Ssamjang, and the tangy kimchi was particularly enjoyable and really elevated the meal.
Final Thoughts
Moranbong's Samgyeopsal set made it easy to enjoy a Korean BBQ meal at home. While the thinner pork slices worked well, I think thicker cuts would enhance the experience even more. The onion leek, Ssamjang, and the added kimchi were the highlights for me, adding vibrant flavors to the dish. If you come across this set, it's definitely worth trying for a simple, satisfying meal.
