Dumpling Delights at Toton Tram Stop

By myfoodhunt on September 2, 2024

Dumpling Delights located at the end of the line at the Toton Tram stop is a fabulous little spot for some tasty Chinese snacks. I had read about the place in the local paper and the name alone was enough to get me interested. So I rode the tram out to Toton from the city to check the place out for myself.

Once was arrived we got chatting to Hui Wang, the lovely lady behind the serving hatch, and she handed us a couple of stools through the window so we could perch by the hatch to watch her cook

We had a lot of fun talking about the food, her plans for the cafe, and shared travelling and eating experiences. It was like being greeted by an old friend, yet we had only just met.

DUMPLING DELIGHTS MENU

The Food menu is short and simple, just enough to pique my interests and small enough to allow the chef to cater easily to everyone. I love dumplings, noodles and fried rice so there was everything on there that I need in my life.

Being short and sweet it was easier to order top so we ordered almost everything, some dumplings, Singapore noodles and some chicken fried rice.

I suppose we could have also had the Sweet and Sour Chicken but I was saving that for another day so that I had something to come back for (I already knew that I would be back even before we ate!)

DUMPLINGS / POTSTICKERS

As you all know I love any kind of dumplings but I have a particular penchant for those of the 'potsticker' variety and those are exactly the type that Hui Wang makes.

Freshly hand-made and served to order, these are the things to eat here. I loved watching her roll the wrappers out one by one from a small ball of dough, then carefully filling each one with a spoon of mixture before pinching the crimp together.

Each dumpling goes into the hot pan to sear at the bottom, then a little liquid is added and the lid put on to steam away. Then you end up with the perfect dumpling!

INSIDE THE DUMPLING

There were two fillings on offer, Chicken and Beef, and we were going to try some of each! The mixture was made up of finely chopped beef or chicken alongside carrot, onion, oyster sauce, soy sauce, ginger and sesame oil.

I surprised myself by enjoying the beef filling a little bit more, but not for the right reasons! The chicken was quite delicate so you really could pick out all of the flavour of the soy and ginger but the beef one was much meatier and so was more gravy like and had a more powerful punch.

I do actually prefer a filling of pork but they don't do that here, well not at the moment 😎🧐

SINGAPORE NOODLES (VERMICELLI)

The second dish we enjoyed was the noodles or Singapore Vermicelli as stated on the menu which I ordered with chicken. This was dispatched through the hatch on the same plate that we ate the dumplings from, no need to make extra washing up and we were doing our bit to avoid waste by not having it in a takeaway carton too

This was another dish hand made from scratch, we watched Hui chop up all the ingredients so finely, slicing carrot, red pepper, and onion while cooking the dumplings, steaming some rice and talking to us. Top level multi-tasking! 😎❤️

This noodles dish , with a hint of spice, was flavoured gently, there seemed so much restraint to keep it perfectly balanced. At home mine would be tasting of just soy or loads of ginger but here you could taste every element and subtlety was winning the day

Officially the ingredients were turmeric, curry powder, fish oil, oyster sauce and soy sauce, but as I say none of them overpowered the others so if I hadn't read that on the ingredients list stuck to the hatch window I wouldn't have been able to pick them all out

I wasn't sure that I have had Singapore Vermicelli before, or maybe I have and it just wasn't as memorable as the one cooked up here at Dumpling Delights

CHICKEN FRIED RICE

The last dish we ate (also on the same plate) was the chicken fried rice which was also delicately spiced, it was totally unlike the clumpy mess you get from a takeaway and reminded me so much of freshly made bowls served on my travels

The surprise with this was that as we were having Chicken, Hui didn't add egg as well, apparently that is the way to do it and probably why it was so good and so much better than the take out stuff!

When I reflect on the way I cook it at home I realise that less is definitely more. Secretly though I might come back and have this with the sweet and sour chicken just to be a glutinous heathen 🤣

All in all It was a total joy to visit, Hui at Dumpling Delights from Start to Finish, great food and great chatting.

It might have taken a bit longer than some fast food wok outlets you may be used to in town, but this was a lot more fun and worthwhile.

Days like this were why I started all the blogs, seeking out treats such as these and being able to share. Go for yourself, eat it all and have a chat, you won't regret a moment!

You will find Dumpling Delights at the end of the platform of Toton Tram stop which is officially located at Toton Ln., Stapleford, Nottingham NG9 7JB

The contact details for Dumpling Delights if you want to order ahead or just check in on opening times is on their Facebook Page along with the menu
