Golf, eh? This is one of those sorts of games, but with a big push towards positive mental health things! A nice combination for this Q1 2024 release on the Playdate.
Faraway Fairway is a lovely little golf game. There's no hyper pressure to deliver or the like. It's from indie studio Hedgehog Dreams and is rather dreamy indeed. FORE!
Chillout Golf in the World of Faraway Fairway
This is a procedurally generated gold game where you play along at your own pace. Think of Mario Golf on the Game Boy, but without Mario. You're kind of there.
Oh and there's indie RPG darling Golf Story (2019), too, but this doesn't have RPG stuff in it. No, Faraway Fairway is all about the chillax time of it. An arcade style game, sure, where you push to putt the ball and all whilst snapping pictures of the fancy locations along the way.
Designer Rokashi has been vocal about the game's attributes. Here he is waxing lyrical about them.
So, yes, this is a relaxing style pick-up-and-play jaunt and one we enjoyed on the fancy Playdate handheld. Faraway Fairway boats some of the best pixel art graphics on the system,
There's also a cute soundtrack from composer Sam Webster. Like jazzy background vibes. He's been nice enough to upload the entire OST to his YouTube channel.
This isn't the only golf game on the Playdate, but it is the one most noble in its pursuits—the relaxing qualities are evident from the moment you fire the title up.
Then into the game you do go to hit balls with a stick, snap photos, and the procedurally generated element provides a great deal of long-term variety.
Highly recommended, then, if you own a Playdate. The handheld console's games continue to get better and better and Hedgehog Dreams has deliver a mini marvel with this effort. Fore? No. It's a HOLE IN ONE.
