[Pork-free] Jom, makan pisang goreng! Operating since the 80s, the SS2 Goreng Pisang 炸蕉黄 food truck is a familiar sight for most growing up in PJ.
This stall is located just in front of KyoChon restaurant in SS2 - or what used to be Nasi Kandar Pelita - in the popular SS2 commercial centre.
SS2 Goreng Pisang food truck
SS2 Goreng Pisang serves one of the best fried banana fritters in Petaling Jaya.
In fact, both Max and Ming grew up eating from this stall, which had gained a loyal following over the decades.
As the name implies, SS2 Goreng Pisang is known for its famous golden banana fritters, which are freshly cooked using Pisang Raja and homemade special batter.
Apart from Pisang Goreng, the food truck also sells a variety of snacks such as Kuih Bakul Goreng, Cucur Udag, Cempedak Goreng (seasonal), Popiah, Cekodok, Curry Puffs, Fishballs, Keropok, and Youtiao.
SS2 Goreng Pisang - more than banana fritters
It's been years since we ate pisang goreng, but a sudden craving immediately reminded us of this food truck.
We visited this at 2pm on a public holiday, and all the banana fritters were sold out by then!
No matter, we bought its Popiah Goreng (the uncle also gave us free Cucur Udang and Curry Puff!). All three snacks were delicious (our mom enjoyed them too!), but we knew we had to return for the banana fritters.
One of the best Chinese-style pisang goreng in PJ
On our second visit on a workday - we managed to buy the elusive Pisang Goreng and Kuih Bakul Goreng.
We are happy to report that they still tasted as good as ever!
We really enjoyed this as the batter is incredibly light and crispy - and the banana had the perfect ripeness for a slightly mushy (but firm) texture.
When deep-fried, the Pisang Raja truly makes for a delicious bite as it has a beautiful sweetness that other varieties just can't beat!
Enjoyable kuih bakul goreng
We also enjoyed the Kuih Bakul Goreng (deep-fried nian gao) - which is essentially deep-fried glutinous rice cake wedged between a slice of yam and sweet potato.
Coated in the same batter used for the banana fritters, the result is a lovely soft and chewy sticky rice cake, contrasting with the earthy flavors of the yam and sweet potato.
We liked that the nian gao wasn't very sweet, and the batter was light and crispy as well.
This time, the aunty also gave a sample of the Cekodok Pisang.
Summary
Overall, both the pisang goreng and kuih bakul really hit the spot for us! The snacks tasted as good as we remembered.
SS2 Goreng Pisang also operates a kiosk in One Utama. Apart from the usual snacks, the food truck is also currently selling snacks/cookies for the upcoming Chinese New Year.
