Hi friends, welcome back! Spring came early at the New York Botanical Garden. The Enid A. Haupt Conservatory was transformed into a colorful oasis for the twenty first annual Orchid Show and I was excited to attend. The theme this year is Florals in Fashion and it's on display until April 21st Tuesday through Sunday from 10am-6pm. If you want a more festive experience, the NYBG offers Orchid Nights on the weekends from March 30th through April 20th for people over twenty-one to enjoy the flowers with a cocktail.
Jon and I went on a chilly Sunday morning and felt like we were transported to a tropical oasis upon entering the conservatory. The humidity and warmth were a welcome treat although it took a bit for my camera lens to stop fogging up. The show starts with a preview of the Florals in Fashion theme.
Then we moved through the conservatory enjoying the variety of orchids in the NYBG's collection. In the world there are an estimated 25,000-30,000 different types of orchids making them the largest family of plants.
I enjoyed getting some close up shots of the orchids as we made our way through the different climates.
They saved the best for last with these magnificent displays by the fashion designers! It's pretty incredible how creative people are. Per the NYBG's press release, "The sartorial scene is set by thousands of diverse orchids and accessorizing plants in dramatic, picture-perfect installations, highlighting the bold, fashion-themed creations of three rising design stars—Collina Strada by Hillary Taymour, Dauphinette by Olivia Cheng, and FLWR PSTL a.k.a. Kristen Alpaugh—who have all been inspired by nature"
"In The Orchid Show: Florals in Fashion, three visionaries each present their unique perspective on the connections between the botanical world and fashion. Hillary Taymour is founder and creative director of Collina Strada, a fashion platform dedicated to promoting climate and social awareness and fostering self-expression. Olivia Cheng is designer and founder of fashion label Dauphinette, which is best known for its use of preserved botanicals and repurposed materials to create upcycled fashions. FLWR PSTL is Kristen Alpaugh, botanical artist, and founder and creative director at Haus of Stems, the world's first on-demand botanical art atelier, known for her experimental botanical artwork and custom wearables."
After the show Jon and I soaked in the sun and fresh air outside the conservatory. Daffodils and bluebells were just starting to bloom meaning spring is on the way! We attempted to walk around the garden, but the cold and wind had us making a beeline back to the car.
Jon and I had such a great time seeing the Orchid Show and look forward to returning to the garden. Hopefully when the cherry blossoms and magnolias are blooming! If you live near NYC I'd highly recommend getting a NYBG membership. Our dual membership was $115 and includes two free parking passes, half price parking year round (parking is $22), member days, and unlimited entry to the garden and special exhibits. Without our membership this outing would've cost $92, so after our next visit the membership will already provide a decent savings. What do you think of the Flowers in Fashion Orchid Show?
