Sunflowers and the Light of God

Elizabeth Brooks

June 3

Hey there! Ever seen a sunflower follow the sun across the sky? It's pretty amazing how these bright, beautiful flowers turn their faces towards the light from dawn until dusk. This natural wonder can teach us a lot about filling our lives with the presence of God and His righteousness. Just like sunflowers, we can learn to always turn towards the Light of the World, Jesus Christ.

Embracing the Light (Matthew 5:14-16):

Sunflowers are known for their ability to seek and face the sun. Jesus tells us that we are the light of the world, meant to shine brightly for all to see. Just as a sunflower doesn't hide its light, we shouldn't hide ours. By loving others, being kind, and standing up for what's right, we shine our light.

Affirmation: "I am a light in the world, shining God's love wherever I go."

Staying Rooted (Psalm 27:1):

The Lord is our light and our salvation. When sunflowers grow, their roots go deep into the soil to find water and nourishment, even when it's not visible on the surface. Similarly, when we root ourselves in God's Word and His presence, we have nothing to fear. Even on cloudy days or when we face challenges, we know that God is with us, and His love is our strength.

Affirmation: "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?"

Avoiding the Empty Vase (Matthew 12:43-45):

In Matthew 12, Jesus tells a story about a house swept clean but left empty, making it easy for trouble to come back even worse. Think of your heart like a vase. If it's empty, it can be filled with anything, good or bad. But if you fill your life (your vase) with God's presence, prayer, and love, there's no room for negativity or darkness to return. Be like a sunflower that's full of life, turning towards the sun, not an empty vase waiting to be filled with whatever comes along.

Affarnation: "I fill my heart with God's word and love, leaving no room for darkness."

How to Be a Doer:

  • Seek the Sun Daily: Just as sunflowers need daily sunlight, we need daily time with God. Start your day with a prayer or a Bible verse to set your mind on God.
  • Grow Deep Roots: Join a youth group or a Bible study. These are like the water and nutrients for sunflowers. Surrounding yourself with other believers helps your faith grow deep and strong.
  • Shine Brightly for Others: Look for ways to help and encourage your friends, family, and even strangers. Small acts of kindness can be a bright light in someone's day.

Being a Christian is like being a sunflower in a world that often feels dark. We are called to turn our faces towards the Light—Jesus—and reflect His love and righteousness to everyone around us. Remember, it's not enough just to read or hear about God's Word; we must live it out every day.

Remember, every morning, you have a choice: to turn towards the light and grow in God's love or to stay in the shadows. Be a sunflower. Seek the Light, grow deep roots in faith, and shine brightly in the world.

Affirmation to Carry With You: "Today, I choose to turn towards God's light, to grow in His love, and to shine brightly for all to see."

Keep shining, sunflower! 🌻
